Oh one final question, and it's an odd one: I work with my Taskbar on the left, vertical, as it gives me more vertical space to work. Did that before in Vista, and it was never a problem, couldn't be causing it now could it?

If you have recently updated your video drivers re-run the Windows Experience Index. It's happened to me at least once where after updating drivers Aero stopped working. Re-running WEI got it working again. It may just be that your onboard graphics don't meet the minimum requirements to run Aero even with the latest and greatest drivers.

Guys,

Thanks so much for all your suggestions and your work on this really niggly problem, but ultimately I managed to fix it the strip-mining way.

I just reinstalled Windows from startup, took a while, but it sorted it out, what a frickin pleasure to get the look and feel. Sigh, of relief.

Thanks again.
