Windows 7: Need Full Windows Services List

The genius of Win7 is that they set formerly Auto services to Manual on fast triggers. So there is almost nothing (besides Tablet and maybe Offline files) which doesn't need to be running at the moment.

The exception might be networking services if you're not using those.

I previously lived by Black Viper's guides in XP and especially to tame pre-SP1 Vista bloatmonster. Not any longer, as Win7 has become the Black Viper.

I wouldn't call your specs average. Decent enough though for an AMD build.

I agree, they seem pretty good for a budget PC.

EDIT:

I retract my post and point you all to Carl's. He said it much clearer and better.

Actually you just became a fan boy. I hate Apple and its pretty OS and rarely use linux.

And for the record again I agree with Dark. I say this instead of going on when all I would do is repeat what he has said.

@Frostmourne. I am glad you think your system is good and I also am glad you think your system is the bar at which everyone else should compare themselves.

And FYI what do I need presentationfontcache running for on my gaming machine? Really? It's disabled now...

I could go on but I am no longer wasting my time on fanboys.

With due respect, that strikes me as an extremely naive statement. Upfront, I want to state that I am not anti-MS. If it were not for MS and IBM, we would not be sitting at our personal computers enjoying this forum. MS-DOS and IBM brought affordable personal computing to us.

That said, MS is a large corporation whose bottom line is profit. There is nothing wrong with that. Free enterprise has made this country great. Has MS broken the law and/or violated ethics? You bet; such actions have been thoroughly documented. Have they used heavy handed tactics at times to squash competition? You bet; such is also thoroughly documented. Has MS done anything that many, maybe most corporations, have done worldwide? No. Does that justify it and make it right? No.

Bottom line: I don't trust MS, GM, Toyota, Michelin, or any other large corporation with my life any more than I trust the government, especially the government. I want to be free to make my own decisions about life and about computing and I accept the consequences of any bad decisions I make.

I never care about which services are running- Microsoft knows a billion times more than I do about their operating system. Disabling services can only cause trouble.
Not quite true. Disabling needed services can only cause trouble. The trick is to know which services you need for your computer setup and for your computing purposes. Does it hurt anything to let unneeded services run anyway? Probably not unless one is using resources right at the max. But for me it is the learning experience of my OS.

The program linked was something I used frequently on XP it shows you all of the programs that are listening or communicating over networks/internet/etc. so you can see that program x is sending and recieving info or is listening for incoming network activity.

There is now a Live version that is run as an ?online-app? I guess over the internet so you dont have to install it. The original program itself though is a standalone app that doesn't even need to be installed and its only a few k's.... fun stuff. All of sysinternals apps are top-notch and low footprint.

I suggest checking out Process Explorer as an alternative to Task manager/System monitor as it shows all process threads and you can stop individual threads/processes/services/and even whole process trees. You can also Pause/resume/restart processes and view all information on each process. It's amazing.

But GM doesn't provide free cars to every African schoolkid, Toyota doesn't use their profits to fund half of the world's HIV drugs, Michelin doesn't wire third world countries to get PC's in every school.

There is a difference between MS and typical megacorp, and it is the good they are doing with their profits from a billion customers. They are helping another billion, and humanity itself.

What other corp can say that? Give credit where it is due.
