    Desktop items, shortcuts etc

I had expected these items to point to my desktop but most appear to be on the users\public\desktop. Is that as it should be? I saved a few downloads to my desktop and they weren't there ... at least not on the desktop right in front of me. But if I go into my desktop via start-myname-desktop I see the items ... which is kind of telling me that while I am signed in as me - I am not seeing my own desktop. Is that possible and how do I correct this?

Set it to \users\username\Desktop and see if that works.

I'm sorry - but what would I set to this? I took another look and it appears that I am on my own desktop - otherwise I suspect I would not see items pointing specifically to my desktop and some of the items do. And so now I am baffled as to where I just saved five downloaded items. If I go to start-Rik-desktop I see them but they are not actually on my desktop. If I grab them from the start-Rik-desktop folder and try to drop them on to the desktop in front of me I get an message indicating the source and destination are the same. But they aren't here ...grrrr.

I believe that this has to do with permissions. I just checked my username desktop and it shows one of three icons on showing on the desktop at the moment, to the public/desktop, which has the other two. It appears that the difference is that they have a different owner holding full control than the other one. However, I'm not sharp enough to advise you as to how best to deal with this. I recommend waiting until someone else responds. However, I shall mention that you could use takeownership on the missing files, and that MAY solve the problem. Handle takeownership with care, if you take ownership of the wrong things, it could mess things up.

    Interesting.
Well - I tried something else that seems to have worked - although I don't know why. I entered my desktop folder via start-Rik-desktop and found the five files that I could not see on my desktop and I dropped one of them into another folder that I had on my desktop that was in the desktop folder. I then went back to my desktop - opened that folder and dropped the item back out onto the desktop itself and all five showed up. Odd.
