Sorry to necro a topic, but I found something that reminded me of this:
Not suicidal enough to try extracting the file, but if anyone wants it PM me.

wow. what has the power to do that?
i've always just used winrar.
ok so , we agree now the debate is not on whether something can be highly compressed , but whether we are getting the very full version of the said software ?
Already compressed data cannot be compressed to even smaller size.
Windows 7 installation files are already probably compressed and compressing them gives you maybe few % smaller size.
If you try uncompressed data you can compress few gigs to size of 100mb or something, it's very useful when can do that, which you can't with windows 7.
This has nothing to do with how good the software is, jsut that it is already compressed, like Copernicus said: "It'd be like trying to make a crumpled piece of paper even smaller."
Try that first and you'll get it :P
My god people can be so stupid. Several people (including myself I believe on one of the pages), have stated this highly compressed stuff is a load of ****. But in case you didn't get the message:
ITS A LOAD OF ABSOLUTE ****.
You simply CANNOT compress several gigs of data into such a miniscule amount, especially already compressed data. Anyone that has even a tiny bit of knowledge of how compression actually works will tell you this. You just can't turn several gigs of data into mere kbs. Someone linked to the KGB Archiver page - firstly, if you read the tests, the best it could do was 600kilobytes from a 3megabyte file. Thats a 5:1 compression. So, now take the an Office 2007 DVD. I'm not sure how big it is, but assuming the fact its on a DVD its obviously more than 700mb. But we'll use 700mb as a baseline. 700 / 5 is 140mb. 140mb, a lot more in contrast to those saying its a few mb. Thats assuming that the files aren't already compressed, the Office 2007 install is 700mb AND the compression algorithim is able to compress at the same rate for the different file types and bigger files.
But don't take my word for it, download some of these. I tried it, against my knowledge and logic, and NONE of them worked. Which leads me onto the next point - with all this evidence against it, how can these files still compress and uncompress to the certain amounts, surely its working with data, right? Yes. Null byte data. Look at the files with a hex editor and you'll see, null bytes. Thats how the "compression" and "uncompression" of this scam works. The KGB Archiver compression looks for patterns, and what a nice pattern null bytes are. If you can't understand why this is, you shouldn't be trying to debate this topic.
If you still don't believe me, fine, be ignorent. Through fact and personal experience I can tell you this is a crock of ****. Oh btw, do a netstat while your uncompressing with KGB Archiver, it does some nice background network connections. I don't know what they are for, but thats fairly unsolicited coming from a compression program.
Edit: Further research on my part found a site called maximum performance. The site shows compression algorithims compared by ratio etc. I looked at the multiple file one, it took 308mb of mixed data and compressed it. KGB Archiver's best one acording to its page is PAQ7, but the site showed PAQ8 and PAQ6. PAQ8, was able to reduce it to 60mb, once again, a 5:1 compression ratio like the KGB test of PAQ7. PAQ6 only reduced to it 80mb. Still fairly well. Unfortuantely, WinRAR 3.8 also was able to compress it to 80mb. Even if you could benefit from KGB's compression methods, the amount of time it takes to decompress offsets the amount of time it would take to download the extra part. Unless of course, we're talking a terabyte of data. Then you would be saving yourself around 130 gig. But, it may take days on end for it to actually decompress.

Well as I have already said , I decompressed a WORKING version of Office 2007, I cant explain why you couldnt get one working??
I did so without any network connection (and in fairness, that said laptop has never been connected since anyway ), so I couldnt tell you why it is still working without KGB doing some nice background network connections.
But please , in the future , when debating , if you cant get your point of view across , try jumping up and down before throwing your body to the ground and stamping your feet, .. instead of using terms that try to bring others down , for the benefit of making yourself look better/smarter ?
And please , before insulting someone ...use spell check .
As for all the people who have EXPLAINED why it CANT happen , thank you , I have taken this onboard. I still have access to various software which has been compressed quite a lot, and like some here have said, parts of the original versions must be missing. But if it functions (to my needs) without "said parts" then surely that is what counts ?

Ok,
I know this is an emotive subject - that is no excuse for not being civil to each other - If you cannot post without insults then please do not post at all.
