Ive "Seen" an example of what you are talking about , it was done on Office 2007 and it was compressed down to ... get this 13.5kb .. ok I didnt believe it either till it was uncompressed and took like 26 hours to do just that !
Anyway it was done with KGB as mentioned above ... how? I dont know , but maybe there is an option on how much compression can be done ... btw , after that version of Office was unloaded and set up (to me) it seemed buggy ...
lol Office 2007 can not be compressed to 13.5 kb no matter what the options are or software used. Not even close to 13.5 mb either.
Seriously people that kind of compression does not exist. The only files you will find that appear to be compressed that much are fake files made to increase a users upload ratio.

So I guess its all just a big fake ? oh well , I was just trying to let the original poster be "aware" of such tools , IF they are real.
It does exist, and KGB archive can do it. no joke. but seriously, it takes aaagggeesss to compress that, and aaaggeeesss decompress.
KGB is not the only program that can compress to these unheard of sizes. The algorithms have been around for a good decade or longer. It's all a matter of someone coding it up. and many have.
wow people... As a software engineer who minored in digital signals and image processing I'd just like to debunk the possibility of a 13.5 kb office, or vista at 4 mb etc. Anyone who knows how compression works understand that the lookup table on any thing compressed down to a size like that would be bigger than 13.5 kb and possibly bigger than 4 mb. Furthermore certain data types compress different than others. It also depends on whether or not what you are compressing is lossy or lossless. And data such as office is definitely a lossless data.
On top of that if magically someone we're to compress the windows 7 installation to 300 mb's, and you extracted it and installed it, it would work the same as the other installation if it installed. You see the windows installation has multiple CRC's that it verifies during installation and it would have whined and complained and not worked if the files were any different.
And on that note, don't download any of these small little 4 mb installation files, they are definitely viruses!
I just compressed the lord of the rings hd extended edition all 3 of them to this sequence of 1's and 0's... Wow KGB :P (if yer wondering what that is, it's 8 bit ascii codes, and I totally used the calculator in windows 7 to get the bits)

I bet ***even*** money that the KGB was *downloading* those components as opposed to extracting those components.
Furthermore, in case you don't remember, the majority of the files on the disc are in *.cab format - called a Microsoft Cabinet format - which is in and of itself a compressed file format.
You try compressing *.cab files and you cannot get more than 50% compression on any file no matter which archive you use. Therefore, compressing the entire disc will, at ***most*** give you a 50% compression - which leads to an image that is still over 1GB in size.
So, if you *think* you're getting a deal with a 'compressed' image, think again - you're getting hoodwinked, or possibly more - who knows what type of virus / Trojan you are actually allowing on there?
If you take a look at the KGB Archiver test page you will see it does not even come close to this kind of compression.
How much you can compress depends on the nature of the data. Let put it this way, if we could compress windows 7 to 200MB, how bout recompress that 200MB to 100MB then 50MB.... You see my point? Most binary data is already highly compressed.
