Need help with unlocking folders & files

    Hello,

I've spent so much time with this, tryin' to figure this out and still can't... Hopefully this forum can help.

Here's the situation: I wanted to set up a password to one of my hard-drives. For some reason BitLocker didn't work or I don't think it did. So somewhere somehow I found "Encrypt" button and tried to encrypt hard drive. Well, for some weird reason I couldn't get it to lock where I could unlock it with a password. So I decided to un-encrypt it. Once I did - I wasn't able to get into my folders. I tried to go to the properties - security - permissions. It says ownder unidentified. Then I have to set myself up as a owner and I was able to get into some folders. But it seems like I have to do it with all the folders. ...My question: how to get rid of that parental control? These are my files and folders and I can't turn it off... There's this whole mess with not bein' able to recognize/find the owner and these issues... I can't even change read only option...

Please help. I really appreciate it. Thanks.

Update: I finally found out how to change the owner. Even though it's really confusing how Windows 7 operates in this area. ...Now, another question: how to take off the little lock icons next to every folder and file?

What exactly did you modify in the first place?

Well, like I said - first I encrypted the hard drive. Then un-encrypted it. Then I couldn't get into any of folders. It said the access is denied. Then it lead me to the security tab and there I had to change the permissions. I went to advanced and specify owner. It said owner wasn't detected, so I had to set myself as an owner and apply and then I finally got the access to each folder this way... I still have little yellow lock on every folder and file icons... Is there a way to get rid of those? (just like it used to be?)

Reinstall 7, you may have broken the ACL's and some apps may not work right in the future.

Access Control Lists, every user and resource has one and they define what can and can't access the resource. Yours may have been corrupted/changed. Freshly reformatting 7 will fix this. Just double check whenever you are changing security options.

i have a similiar issue with the locks on the icons. i have a desktop and a laptop...both with win7. i setup a homegroup at one point then removed it...opting for sharing folders over my network. the folders are accessible...but...any new file i download into my shared folder on my desktop is not accessible from my laptop until i SHARE the new file with everyone/read or everyone/read-write. all new files downloaded are like this..having a lock on the icon. is there a way of making it so that the files i download are automatically shared like they used to be? sorry if this is covered somewhere else but i could not find it anywhere. thnx :)

Can you download into a different folder? Delete the shared folder and create another unshared folder?
