How Best Repair after Disk Failure

My SSD failed but I got it back up again by running checkdisk on a laptop. It is not entirely problem free though. Cannot get IE8 working, it crashes on the spot I open it. I have so far been happy not to gain any experience from a disk failure. What would be the best way to repair? I am thinking it is difficult to know what was damaged and just backing a restore point could pehaps be dangerous.

What about SFC, could this be done without risk, you think?
Otherwise a Startup Repair or any other suggestion?

Hello Submarine, sorry to hear of your trouble mate.

I'd try a system restore first (to a point before the issue) and then a sfc /scannow.

You think System Restore is safe? I worry a bit the shadow copy could be more damaged than W7 itself. Do not know if SFC checks its own integrity somehow.

I am confident in system restore. It should not be used on a daily basis, but if you have a problem, that is the easy way out. If it does not repair, you lost nothing.

OK, maybe system restore will work. My disk was quite corrupt though, it could not even be seen from Vista or from an installation disk. Not even on the laptop it showed up from a command prompt. Checkdisk recovered what it could and marked parts as bad, and disk was bootable again.

Have you got the data you need off of it and backed up before you do anything, just to be on the safe side?

Yes all data is safe. Only PS, Spyder3 and printer utilities installed. I will try to back a restore point.

If you take my advice and use system restore, be sure to use a point far enough that it is prior to the problem. When given the choice of Restore points, you will see a box that if checked will give additional points, be sure to check it.
