Problem fixed, at least for the time being.
I had no restore points. It was turned on but max size was set to zero. Perhaps because I am running a SSD? What do you recommend as I am unable to Trim on my machine?

SFC /Verifyonly found no issues. Sound reassuring.

The problem was a faulty add-on in IE8. Classic. Adobe pdf helper, sort of classic too. Now disabled. Is there a way to uninstall the add-on entirely?

Looking in my log there are some errors of interest:
    Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-EventTracing/Admin. Kernel-EventTracing Event ID 3. SessionName: ReadyBoot. FileName: C:\Windows\Prefetch\ReadyBoot\ReadyBoot.etl. ErrorCode: 3221225864
Is this system restore failing due to no space?

System VDS Basic Provider EventID 1. EventData: 490@01010004.
Related to Virtual Disk Management somehow? Do not have that as far as I know.

    SideBySide Event ID 35:
Activation context generation failed for "c:\program files (x86)\windows live\photo gallery\MovieMaker.Exe".Error in manifest or policy file "c:\program files (x86)\windows live\photo gallery\WLMFDS.DLL" on line 8. Component identity found in manifest does not match the identity of the component requested. Reference is WLMFDS,processorArchitecture="AMD64",type="win32",version="1.0.0.1". Definition is WLMFDS,processorArchitecture="x86",type="win32",version="1.0.0.1". Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.

    Processor architecture=AMD64????

No disk parity errors as I saw from Vista. I wonder if the crash was caused by the H2A firmware in the SSD or if it was just an incompatibility issue with my mobo.

    Thanks!
It seems preftech is doing something. I guess I can turn it off in the registry. For some reason superfetch appears to be on (value=3), yet I have disabled the service. Perhaps this is two different settings in the registry, it really should do nothing if the service is disabled.

This sounds like another in-place Upgrade gone awry. No matter how successful, an in-place Upgrade is a corruption path and should be avoided or clean reinstalled as soon as possible.

Why not have the best possible install with Win7?

Here's the steps: Clean Install Windows 7

When you boot the DVD to Custom install using drive tools (to wipe and format) it will scan the HD to see an OS to allow use of Upgrade key.

But first, I would run the HD diagnostics/repair CD from your maker's Support Downloads webpage for your model.

The installation is not an upgrade, it is a fresh install
