Just done a fresh installation of 7 Ultimate, updated all the drivers to current ones.
Problem is as soon as I listen to music and run a program or download anything from the Net the computer becomes totally un-responsive, mouse jitters & freezes, music jitters and drops in and out and sounds like a robot.
Any ideas people ?????

Does the computer seem more stable in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking?
Several things that you can try.
View the event viewer for errors
Type memory diagnostics in search and take the overnight test.
Try a clean boot.
Try in safe mode
This will help you or us determine the problem.

I think there is a memory problem.
Go into Services and disable the "Windows driver foundation".
You certainly don't seem to be the only one having the problem. So, what might cause the studdering?
Maybe a codec problem..
Internet connection..
Media being scanned by some anti-virus or firewall?
Router firewall?
I have seen things about iTunes having a utility to report media usage.
I think I have seen comments about Adobe using the bandwidth.
Have you watched Task Manager to see if anything uses more CPU time during video playback?
Have you tried downloading and using Process Explorer to do the same as Task Manager, but more detailed.
Have you used the Performance snap-ins to watch what might be going on?
Did you change out any drivers that were given by Win7 installer or Windows Updates?
If so, roll them back to check performance. Use Win7 installer drivers unless performance dictates otherwise.
he has 4gb of ram - how can that be not enough ? - 7 will run quite smoothly on 2gb - graphics card is a bit low (256mb) may explane the video issues possibly although you can run 7 on a 256mb card - as for the music problem maybe a codec issue - most probably media player 12 swallowing up his processor when he launches it to play audio / media files ( well known issue with mp12) - but he definately has well enough ram
Steve - check this link out Windows Media Player 12 - CPU hog issue - i had all the same issues you have - its media player 12 thats the problem this post will explane how to downgrade to media player 11 - there is no auto installer for 64 bit windows 7 so you will need to go to this link to get the x64 version WMP11 x64.zip - read the post before you do this as there are some small side effects such as not being able to double click music/video files in explorer & play them - they must be played from media player its self - small issue but a hell of a lot better than having your processor swallowed up by the updating media libraries problem on wmp12 (it does it whenever you launch the player & also when you launch the internet browsers - you can see this by opening up task manager & looking at resource monitor then launch media player 12 & you will see your processor getting eaten alive by the wmp12 service also launch your web brouser & you will see the same wmp12 process eating your processor as well - this is why you have the feezing / stuttering problems as you have no rerserves of processor to run anything - wmp12 is eating it all& also as Frostmourne has pointed out your processor is a bit old so you will get worse issues than i did but do the downgrade & you will be ok with your current processor
