    Can't create a New Shortcut

    Brink,
Help! Somewhere I've shot myself in the foot. I don't really know how far back the misdeed occurred but: I can't create a desktop shortcut. I can still create a new folder and new text document.

When I select "Shortcut" from the New list, nothing, Nada, gar nichts.

This wasn't always this way so somewhere, somehow I've done myself in.

Any suggestions as where to look for the offense?

    Hello Karl,

The download in step 9 in the tutorial below can restore and fix the default New - Shortcut option in the context menu.

New Context Menu - Remove & Restore Default Menu Items

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

    Shawn,
You are a life saver. Many, many thanks. Any idea how the problem occurred? The option was shown but clicking on it did nothing until after I applied the .reg file.

My praises and $2.00 will get you coffee at Starbucks. And I can remember when the saying was that praise and a quarter would get you a cup of coffee.

    Once again, many thanks,
    Karl

    You're most welcome Karl. :)

I suppose that a registry cleaning program could have caused it if it cleaned/deleted the wrong entry.

Some of those all-in-one tweaker programs have been known to cause issues like this when a option was inadvertantly set to disable or change something. Could be a number of things though.

Just ran CCleaner again and tested and all is ok. Unusual activities on my part lately have been trying out some very dangerous programs-root kit removers plus running some of the sysinternalsuite programs which work well on xp but I think need some tuning for Win7. The standbys such as Autoruns and ProcessExplorer seem to run seaminglessly but some of the others are questionable.

I more suspect the rootkit removers but that's just suspicion.

I just jined, and thanks for the tip / solution.
I use CCleaner on a regular basis, I agree that that could have caused the issue.

Same problem Can not create shortcut on desktop and only on the desktop
I can create shortcuts in directories
    Used CCleaner.
    Other problems came soon.
Existing shortcut to Delphi raises errors, when double clicked, but not
when right clicked and the launched with the menu item open.
Updates of several programs went wrong.
Zipped archieves are considered with errors, but manually you can unzip them
Antivirus programs don't see anything. It difficult to install them. Errors.

    I was lucky:
    I resolved this:
Go in Windows 7 Save mode (F8). Tried to lauch all programs that are automaticly started.
Creating shortcuts in Save mode did not encounter problems.
After i leaved the Save Mode my computer was as before.
Shortcuts working, updates that crashed now work fine.
    I can not explain this.
Is there anyone that can explain what happened

    Raf

    As from Shawn...
    "Hello Karl,
The download in step 9 in the tutorial below can restore and fix the default New - Shortcut option in the context menu.
New Context Menu - Remove & Restore Default Menu Items
    Hope this helps,
    Shawn"

This did not work for me as a straight .REG Merge. I tried both in Safe Mode and in Normal Mode. Nothing changed.

What I did that works is first use
the "Remove ShortCut" registry merge and then followed by the "Restore ShortCut" registry entry. If someone else is experiencing a no help, try that...

    Hope this helps . . . Enjoy!
