Startup programs & services per user

Hi again,
please does anyone know if there is a way to configure startup programs like in msconfig on a per user basis?
A friend of mine has a laptop that is capable of running the game that he wishes to play but not with all the Acer rubbish & so many windows services running. I proved that to him but I don't want to uninstall or stop anything he might need. I would rather set up a gaming account for him if this is possible.
Thanks,
Jas.

Hello Jas,

Sure you can. You can remove the startup programs that you do not want to run for all users, then you can place shortcuts to the programs that you want to run in the user's Startup folder to have it run in only that user account at startup or log on. Method Two in the tutorial below can help show you how to, but there are other options to do so in the tutorial as well if this one does not help.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Do you know if windows services can be set with different startup parameters per user please? I've done a bit of searching on this & it doesn't look to be possible.

Sorry, but no. Services are system wide.

Setting which services are run on a per user basis should actually be very easy to accomplish using a PowerShell script that runs at login. These two pages should have everything needed to get you there (not including shell scripting experience, may substitute patience and elbow grease):

PowerShell Set-Service Cmdlet | -startupType manual -status running
PowerShell - Windows Services. How to Start-Service, Stop-Service

PowerShell is included in Windows 7 by default. Hit win+r->"PowerShell" instead of win+r->"cmd" to run it. You can probably add an alias to your $PATH (in environment variables) somehow to make it shorter (like 'ps' instead, it seems to be unused). I'm sure scripting it and adding to logon are covered on Google somewhere.

As a caveat, this probably won't prevent them from starting on logon before the script is run so you will have to stop them in your script as well.

I'm making an environment where nothing can run but New Vegas.
