Generic Icons

I seem to be having some problems with my icons. I started my computer one day and most of my icons on my desktop, taskbar, and start menu were generic. Here are the effected files:

About QuickTime
Digital Certificate for VBA Project
Getting Started
HP Advisor
HP Update
LightScribe Control Panel
LightScribe Website
Microsoft Clip Organizer
Microsoft Office 2007 Language
Microsoft Office Access 2007

Microsoft Office Groove 2007
Microsoft Office InfoPath 2007
Microsoft Office OneNote 2007
Microsoft Office Organizer
Microsoft Office Outlook
Microsoft Office Picture Manager
Microsoft Office PowerPoint
Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2007
Microsoft Office Publisher 2007
Microsoft Office Word 2007
Microsoft Works Calendar
Microsoft Works Database
Microsoft Works Portfolio
Microsoft Works Spreadsheet

QuickTime Player
PC Alerts
PC Dashboard
PC Discovery
PC Dock
Tour HP Advisor and PC Dock
Uninstall QuickTime
Windows Live Call

Windows Live Writer

I know the list isnt needed but I figured the more info the better. Anyway I have tried deleting the IconCache.db file (as reccomended by most forums) and restarted my computer and it did not work. The programs work but its kind of annoying that the icons wont work. What do I need to do to fix this?

Hi Techguy12

I had exactly the same problem a couple months back though not with as many programs. Mine were mainly with Microsfot programs. I tried everything and got help from numerous sources but to no avail. In the end I totally re-installed windows and "touch wood" the problem has not re-occurred.

It's a bit of a stab in the dark, but possibly it's something in the registry, telling the programs the icons are at X location, when they arent, hence giving you the standard Generic icons.

Maybe do a registry scan with CCleaner and pray that it finds and fixes the problem.

Not sure what caused the issue, but it is most probably either Bitdefender STUPID duplicate files deleter which ruined all of my VMs! or a registery cleaner or a windows Tweaker! Cannot restore to a previous restore point.. it fails! My problem is that A LOT of programs icons went generic...

Working on a fresh install of Windows Ultimate. Got everything in place, programs, etc. Still trying to troubleshoo the built-in webcam problem (not starting up, "Need WIA driver" stuff). I found a driver for it from the manufacturer but right away I noticed it didn't work, the cam didn't work...
