    WEI assessment fail, help!

    Hey there!

I'm having some problems when running the WEI assessment. I'm running the 64 bit build 7000 beta through bootcamp on a late 2006 white iMac Core 2 Duo with the following specs:

    Core 2 Duo 2.1ghz t7400
    3gb DDR2 667mhz
ATI Mobility x1600 128mb (ATI 9.3 driver - latest release that supports x1600)
    250gb HD (60gb windows partition)

I'm encountering the problem at the very end of the assessment when a window will pop up saying "Cannot complete assessment. The assessment or other operation did not complete succesfully. This is due to an error being reported from the operating system, driver, or other component"

I've done plenty of research and no fixes seem to work for me. I've deleted the "DataStore" folder with no success, tried various graphics drivers from 8.12 to 9.3 and the windows update driver and reinstalled atleast four times since I noticed the error.

I have attatched my winsat file incase that is any help.

Please, if anyone could help me diagnose the problem I would greatly appreciate it, i've spent hours trying to fix it and am just about ready to blow!

    Thanks!

It seems as if there is no real audio / video codecs installed, or else something simply is not working correctly.

Assuming that you have installed the boot camp additions and are using the latest and greatest version of BootCamp, can you try to play some video and see if it works? That x1600 is not a high end card by any means, and your machine seems similar to those that I maintain at a lab at the university, so I am wondering if Win7 is simply too powerful for the setup you have (especially the video)?

Do you have dual monitors or two graphics ports plugged into one monitor. I had exactly the same problem for about a week back when it was 6801 and discovered through trial and error that it was because I had 2 plugged in to one. Good luck

Hey guys, thanks for you replies!

first, I dont have any extra monitors plugged in at this time so I won't be able to use that fix

second, I don't think it is the graphics card either as I have the same build of windows seven running well on my ASUS laptop that has an x1700 card which is just renamed x1600.

When browsing around the C:/windows/performance/WinSat folder I noticed some video files sitting in there and when I tried to play them of the 8 videos, only 3 were able to play and they were all WMV.

So assuming that they are the videos that WEI uses, I'm guessing that this is indeed a codec problem?

Does anyone know why the codecs arnt included with windows 7 if they're required for the assessment? I'm running a clean install so I definately haven't removed them, maybe I have a corrupt copy?

    Any suggestions? Thanks!

Most of the problem is Windows 7 is beta. Bootcamp was meant for xp/vista, and naturally windows 7 would probably not come stock with drivers for mac hardware. Maybe when RTM is released, they will update software on mac's part to be able to pick up devices better for Windows 7. Maybe..Windows 7 = Mac Killer IMO.

Hmm, maybe it is just macs problem! I'm not actually using bootcamp for much, I have not installed any bootcamp drivers, windows 7 detected most of the hardware and installed microsoft drivers for most of the components. I'm using official ATI drivers for video and sigmatel drivers for audio.

I haven't atually installed bootcamp at all in this windows installation, just used it within os x to format a windows partition. So really there is no apple software blocking windows from running and the components inside the mac are really just standard pc components which is probably why windows automatically detected them and installed normal microsoft drivers!

I'm starting to think I have a dud copy as it seems windows hasnt installed any codecs required for the assessment! I'm going to download 7077 to see if that makes any difference. If all fails, windows does still work with aero and everything, games work fine etc etc.

Thanks for the help, I would still appreciate any suggestions because I would still love to assess my Mac!

I have a PC and the assessment in older builds failed for me as well. As the builds went up I had no more issues. Try the 7077 and see.

Thats interesting, I will definately give it a try then!

Something interesting just happend with windows, I uninstalled the graphics drivers and installed the standard driver from windows (Standard VGA adpater) so I had no acceleration. I ran the assessment and it completed successfully, 5.4 for cpu, 5.4 RAM, 5.4 HD and 1.0 for graphics (because of driver)! Now thinking about this i'm wondering if without video acceleration, windows may skip the media test or something? I still don't think its a driver issue as i've used 3 different drivers including the official windows update version.

For now I'm just going to download 7077 but it would be interesting to see what you guys can figure out about this issue!

Also, I've looked around the net a bit and there are plenty of mac users running windows 7 perfectly so I'm determined to get a bloody rating :P

    Thanks for the help!

Getting an assessment will not change what the setup can actually achieve. Its just for show only IMO. It will not actually do anything by completing. The builds I ran that would not give me a WEI score, still ran as they should have.

Haha, yes I probably am being a little greedy I would just love to see what this x1600 can achieve in comparison to my laptop (which scored 4.3 for graphics) as it has much higher clocks then the laptop (460/400 laptop, 580/600 iMac)
Im pretty sure some games will only run if your computer meets the required rating aswell, although I'm not sure if this can be bypassed or not.

Windows 7 is running fine apart from this issue though, I'm going to try and download some third party codecs and see if that helps.

    Thanks!
