    Problem with search

I moved the location of the search index, and since then, search does not seem to be functioning properly. The system has finished reindexing, and I can find files (both by name and content) when I use the Start->Search box. However, when I use the Search box in explorer, nothing is ever found.

Can you please point me to a solution to this problem. Thx.

p.s. For those using Adobe Acrobat, iFilter V9.0 seems to work well with Win 7 x64.

Have you tried moving it back? Some system files will cause trouble if moved

No - hard to believe that that is the cause.

    Hello GRoston.

Look at it this way, if something (search) is hard coded to look for "something" in a certain place and "something" has been moved somewhere else, then how could it be found.

No, I understand. But given that the process for moving the index is so simple, it is truly hard to believe that MS engineers are so incompetent that search would break.

Control Panel -> Indexing -> Advanced. This is even discussed in 'Help'.

Sounds like possibly in the Explorer search box pulldown (upper right) you have a filter specified that is causing stuff NOT to be found via this way, but the standard START -> Search has no filters so whatever you type gets found?

Thanks Groston, I see it now. I learned a new one

The search box will look for things in specific locations, I take that you were looking for something you knew where it was for your test, is that correct? For example, you click on C:\ and search for a file name that is, for example, in the c:\Windows directory and Search should find it. But if you were in the Libraries, for example, it wouldn't find it

JimLewandowski - Interesting idea, but I do not believe that any filters are set. Is there a way to check? I thought that the filter term appeared in-line with the search term, and I don't see any.

wallyinnc - I'm surprise that a newbie to Win 7, like myself, could teach anyone anything. When I tried this, I specifically looked for something which I know should be found, i.e., I browsed to a folder and searched for a file in that folder which is visible! But, the search came back empty.
