What is wrong with this pc NOW?

I was on a computer game and when I got off the resolution was huge. No big deal, it happens sometimes and it's nothing that a reboot doesn't fix UP UNTIL NOW. So I reboot the pc, but it comes back the same way. Plus my anti-virus is off (it does that sometimes too) but I can't put it back on. I can't click to turn it back on. I was able to click it to turn on a few times, but it immediantely turns back off. So then I decide to do a system restore. That doesn't help and when it comes back it tells me that there is some error (bluescreen) and it reboots up in safe mode. I reboot and then undo my system restore. I have to manually put my resolution back the way I like, screen size, etc., but I don't have as many options for resolution size anymore. I check the display adapter and it says that it's working fine. I check for driver updates anyway. None. I have no idea what to do about my virus protection except uninstall and redownload.

Thoughts or ideas?

By the way, my monitor has been failing for awhile now. It's on its way out. I should tell you also that I messed around in processes and turned off some things (only processes that I'm running, not windows) becuz I hear it frees up RAM for the game. I also recently got a new psu, video card and motherboard. They are about a month old.

Any ideas?

Hi Tousdae,
1) Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from their website (its free) and run a scan. If it wants to clean up something let it. after the scan, try turning on your regular antivirus.
2) BSODs have codes that help debug them. If you can post a screenshot of the bsod or if you have noted down the code somewhere, let us know, it'll help.
3) Resolution depends on your graphics driver. Its possible your driver is corrupted. Try downloading from the manufacture's website or restore from a copy you might have saved.

I have McAfee. That problem has been resolved. It seems there was a burp in my connection as it was downloading an update so it didn't install properly. I downloaded the update and that is fine now.

I always disable services though .. have for years for this game. Unless I had a stupid moment and disabled something that I shouldn't have?

Bill, do you think I should still run malware, tho McAfee does take care of that. I'm running a full scan now.

Well, if your Mcafee is back in action, its good. But i've seen malwarebytes detecting nasties that every other AV has missed. So unless its terribly inconvenient, do try running it.

If you're into registry tweaking here's a very helpful tool.

Windows 7 Services Registry Files and Information

You download a registry patch for "safe" or "default" services configurations. He has all his tweaks listed on the page so you can see what's disabled and what not.

You can also create your own services tweak here

Just select the pertaining OS towards the bottom of the page. Any changes can be easily reverted back by installing the "default" services patch.
