It's definitely worth upgrading....
Save yourself a few bucks and buy the upgrade version. I do recommend doing a clean install with your upgrade disc though. Performing an "upgrade" install over top of an existing XP installation will only lead to problems and head aches. Here's a useful tutorial on how to "clean" install with an upgrade version. If your machine is working well with XP, and you are interested in Windows 7, then check with the upgrade adviser, look for drivers for anything you use with your PC like printers, video, etc.
Personally I think the update to Win 7 is worth it. There are a lot of improvements that make it easier to use than XP. Just get the upgrade version and do a clean install as mentioned above. |

Just so you know, you can't do an upgrade from XP to windows 7. I believe you can still use and upgrade disk but you will be forced to do a custom (clean) install. All your data will be saved in a windows old folder, stuff like documents, pictures and music. I'd backup what you want to keep anyway. Do some more research before you buy an upgrade disk to make sure it will work. I've installed windows 7 on several windows XP machines and it would not let me do an upgrade. You need Vista for that.

I think this will depend on your needs. For instance, I use my personal laptop at work and I face compatibility issues there. In order to use Win 7, I have my laptop set up in a dual-boot environment with XP on one drive and 7 on a second drive. So far this has worked out ok.

larryddd; Welcome to the 7 forums.
I used the 7 upgrade and did a full install for x64. Prior to that I had XP but also knew I was looking at a full install because I skipped over Vista on the home machine, and made some upgrades like a nice new HD for 7. Coould you edit your Sys-specs so we know some of your machine details? |
