    Take Ownership question

I am looking for a way to remove/turn off the ownership feature altogether. I know about the registry hack that will add "Take Ownership" to the right click menu. I have needed to copy large amounts of files a few times and it takes forever to take ownership of a few hundred GB then you still have to transfer them.

Is there some way to just avoid having to take ownership in the first place?

No, that is a windows 7 security feature, no way to disable it.

Depending on where you store those files may make a difference, if they are stored in a default windows folder, try storing them in a folder you make on the C drive, then any files stored in there will have your ownership by default.

Or move back to XP ; -)

I am actually struggling with this problem myself at the moment.
I stumbled across a CMD command that's called TAKEOWN.
I believe you can use it to take ownership of an entire folder (with sub-folders and files.)

    Command:
    TAKEOWN /F C:\Windows\

Not sure if it works, though.

I would not use that command, it would takedown the Windows folder, not a good choice.

I am confused as to what you would need to move that is hundreds of GB that need to have ownership changed?? I have Gigs and Gigs of Photos and Music I have never needed to take ownership of them. Is it possible you have something miss-configured that is requiring this??

On another note: Be extremely careful what you take ownership of. I have seen many in this forum ask to take ownership of directories only to be back here asking why software does not install or they can't run some program or their machine is not working correctly. Many times the only true fix is a fresh re-load of Windows 7.

Thanks for all the replies. I know about the ways to take ownership of a file or folder via the command line and the registry hack that adds the context menu.

I am looking for a way to remove the ownership feature completely so I never have to take ownership of anything from any drive before I access it. I do computer repair and often have to recover data from someone's drive but before I can copy anything I have to take ownership which can be slow with a 500GB or 1TB drive.

Return to the stone age and use FAT as the file system. It has zero security which is what you want, correct?
