My Documents, etc.

Hey all,

I deleted a partition containing Desktop, My Documents, My Pictures, My Music, etc. before reassigning the path to it's original one in drive C. So now, whenever I login, the system cannot find the Desktop and gives an error saying that it is in a nonexistent place (which it is, it doesn't exist anymore).

I know that to change the Desktop path or My Documents path, you can right click the folder and go to the locations tab. But these folders do not exist anymore for me to right click on. Anyone know how I can change the path so that I can put it back in drive C?

Thanks for the help, I really don't want to have to reinstall Windows 7.

I don't think I want to use system restore because I don't want to go back to that time. I should've explained before, but the reason I deleted the other partition containing My Documents and the Desktop was because I installed another OS on it. So i think if I use system restore, it may screw that up.

Thanks for the help though! Any other ideas?

Hmmm...this seems to need a Windows 7 installation CD. My laptop didn't come with one, it only came with a restore CD which will wipe everything out.

Is there no way to restore the paths manually?

Windows 7 x64 finally!

Talhaguy, Windows 7 has shortcuts to those folders in the System partition but the folders can be "physically" somewhere else. Do you know for sure whether you deleted the shortcuts or the folders? it doesn't look like you deleted both.

Talhaguy,

Create an extra administrator account.
Log on using that new account.

Download, install, READ the help file, then run Junction Link Image.

This will list some "redirects" which your Win 7 was using.

You will notice that you can delete. Do not delete until you know where the folders really are.

Now you can delete an erroneous junction point.
Run cmd.exe as administrator.
Enter following command (now here I'm giving an example);
MKLINK /J C:\Users\Talhaguy\Desktop F:\Users\Talhaguy\Desktop

This is not an operation for the weak at heart. An error can be disastrous.
Also be sure to first type simply MKLINK /? to read some help info on this make link command.

Readers of this post: I will probably be writing a tutorial on this general procedure but not in the very immediate future.

Here's the link you need. Use this link and ONLY this link:

Thanks, karlsnooks. I was having a problem (posted here: Documents on 2 HDs (C: mirrors E:) ) and by using linkmagic I was able to see which folders were linking where. I didn't need to change any links but it definitely showed where to look. Again, I thank you.

I have a devil of a time quite often finding documents I just created and
saved. But I did not look which folder it saved it in, since from years of
working with computers it would always save it to Documents, where a normal
person would want it.

BUT I noticed (after hours of searching,) that it saved the document (a .pdf
file) in a Folder called XKVBTW02, but NOT also in Documents.
This drives me crazy. It's idiotic!!! Why does it do that and why could I
not find it when I searched for .pdf?

How do I fix this so every document is saved in the Documents folder?

BTW It also did not show up under Recent documents, that why it took me
hours to find it again. In above crazy folder.
