Windows 7: Undeletable Links in Startup Menu + CMD file exe rights

Undeletable Links in Startup Menu + CMD file exe rights

I have a link to an exe in the Startup folder of the Start menu of a user. I wanted this to be in the startup of another user as well, so I copied it to that user's startup menu folder. But then I decided that I was going to put it into the Run key.

So I deleted the link from both startup folders, and it is gone now, even from the Recycle bin. However, it is still in the Startup menu of my first user, and I cannot delete it there.

When I right-click, there is no context menu, when I highlight it and hit the Delete key, it has no effect. The yellow pop-up tells me it's a shortcut, and the creation date is the initial creation date of a couple of months ago. When I left-click on it, nothing happens.

I can't figure out what happened to that link and how I can delete it. Can anyone help? Thanks a lot.

Another question I have is regarding a cmd batch file. I run this as a logon script and I'd like to have this admin rights. However, when I right-click on it, I can change various settings in the properties but the option to run it as admin is unselectable. Is this something lile the execution policy for the powershell and I must enable this somewhere? Running scripts directly as admin via the context menu works, I just can't make this permanent for this one script.

Thanks also for all suggestions for this issue

Try deleting the .exe from C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.

For your second question, see this tutorial: Run as Administrator

Option 3 may help you.

Windows 7

Hi Jonathan,

for the startup menu issue, those folders are empty, only the desktop.ini is in there, and also the respective folder of all other users including Default are empty.

When I for example try to right-click and then move the link to the Desktop, Windows tells me that the item is no longer there. So the link seems to be gone, only the icon seems to still be displayed in the startup menu for some reason.

Regarding the cmd admin issue, I am logged on as as admin, but I have not yet tried the 'All Users' button, so I'll do that and report back.

Thanks again

Windows 7

I'm back already.

Seeing that you pointed me to the same folders I had looked at (and cleaned out), I thought maybe it's just that I usually administrate that machine remotely (some rights not being available remotely).

So I went there and logged on to the machine locally (as the same user), and guess what, the same links that had been visible a few minutes before when logged on remotely, were gone. No icons in the startup menu, just the word (empty).

So back to my machine I logged on remotely again and now the icons are gone when logging on remotely as well.

I'll try the cmd admin issue this evening at home.

Thanks again for your help
