    Question about the Command Prompt

I wasn't sure on where to post this, so I'm posting here. Mods, please move this to the right section.

I accidentally set a file format (.jar) to be opened always with the command prompt, now I cannot change it back (the checkbox for "always open with" is disabled).

What I wanted was to leave the prompt in the Open With tab when I right click the file, but it still won't show up there, and I cannot change my .jar back to "Open with javaw.exe".

Is there any place in the Control Panel where I can change this back?

Hello gabrielkfl, and welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

The quickest way I found to do this is to type file in the start search box and select the appropriate link:

    Hello Gabriel,

You might see if you can set the JAR file extension to open with the javaw.exe program you wanted instead in Default Programs. If that does not work, then reinstalling the program should also restore it as the default program.

    Hope this helps,

Thanks for the help, but the Default Programs thing (which was the suggestion from both of you) works fine for other programs, but it still cannot rollback the .jar opening with the Command Prompt.

Now, this reinstalling thing might work. I'm pretty sure WinRAR installer suggests the .jar format, I'll try reinstalling it (If I can change it from the prompt to winrar, I might be able to change it to JRE again without uninstalling java).

EDIT: No good. Still opens with the prompt.

Give this REG download below a try. It should remove the default program settings set by you and leave only the default. Afterwards see if it is back to the default, or if you can change it.

This is what's in the REG file:
    Code:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jar]
