Removing registry entries of uninstalled programs

I have stopped using and uninstalled a couple of programs (poker playing sites) but there are still entries in the Registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Program Name folder and HKEY_USERS>Software for both the programs.

Is it necessary for these to remain in the registry and if not, what would be the best way to remove them.

I don't think those are necessary. An uninstaller like Revo Uninstaller would delete stuff like that.

I'd say go ahead and delete them, but only after creating a backup of the registry.

If you are a avarge user use Ccleaner: CCleaner - Home
Or if you are a advanced user use jv16 Power tools: Registry Cleaner, Optimize Windows with our System Utilities | Macecraft Software

+1, that's what I've done in the past.
