tz frantic, I think if one is running a 64 bit system with lots of RAM, like 16MG and more, and running CAD programs, enabling the system cache would be a good idea. For you and for me, leaving it disabled it the best choice.

Hello,
I found this 7Forums thread via Google. I would like to correct with info I found at Large Files are locking up Windows 7 32 bit and 64 bit :

"Just to clarify, the LargeSystemCache key has no effect on Windows 7. It was only used on 32-bit, pre-Vista versions of Windows. So if the above steps make any difference, it must be because of the other setting."

"The LargeSystemCache value was left in the registry (even though it is no longer used) for compatibility reasons.

Disabled is the default option.

And btw, I've heard that the setting doesn't have any effect in Win 7, that it only was used in pre-vista 32-bits. And that the setting is left in registry just for compatibility reasons.

Anyhow, LargeSystemCache is meant for server use more, hence the name, then background processes gets a bigger attention from the CPU than running programs. LargeSystemCache is also helpful in a network where large over 1GB files are moved around every day basis.

Unless your running a file server which needs a large system cache - with the expense of front running brograms, leave the setting alone.
