What is the average run time for some of the programs that have been recommended? I have used some DOD level wiping programs in the past and hated them because they would take many hours to complete. I guess I just didn't have the patience to wait a day and a half for them to finish.

Personally, if I knew I didn't need an old hard drive anymore and it wasn't worth going through the trouble of trying to sell it, I would probably just take a sledge hammer to it. You could also taken the platters out and scratch the heck out of them on both sides.... a good grinder would do the job very well.

    ACR,
A simple wipe with all zeroes could last up to five hours on a 2 Terabyte drive.
A simple wipe with all zeroes could last less than 1/2 hour on a laptop drive.
Time of the wipe should be of no concern since you are not planning on wiping 100 drives.

A simple wipe with zeroes can be done with DISKPART.

Since I'm always working from a Win7 machine or have a Win7 System Repair CD handy, then I always use DISKPART.

If you have a System Repair CD, then you can use it instead of the Win7DVD mentioned in the following prfocedure. Just boot from the System Repair CD and choose Command Prompt.

CLEAN A HARD DISK PRIOR TO WINDOWS 7 INSTALL

    LEAVE THE DVD TRAY OPEN
Ø Turn on your computer. The purpose of this is so that the DVD door can be opened.
    Ø Open the DVD door.
Ø Turn off the computer with the DVD door open.

BOOT FROM YOUR WINDOWS 7 DVD AND GO TO A COMMAND PROMPT
Ø Insert the Windows 7 DVD and close the DVD door.
    Ø Power on your computer.
Ø When that very first dialog appears where you would normally push the NEXT button, then use the SHIFT + F10 key combo to get to a command prompt.
Ø The command prompt will be X:>

USE THE DISKPART PROGRAM TO “CLEAN” THE HARD DISK
Type the commands shown, hitting the Enter key after each.

Do not proceed to the next command until the current command is finished.

    · DISKPART (the command prompt will change to DISKPART>)
    · LIST DISK (this will list the disks present)
    · SELECT DISK 0 (assuming disk zero is the desired hard disk)
    · DETAIL DISK (this will show you info regarding the disk you selected)
    · CLEAN ALL (this is the command to write zeros to entire disk)
    · EXIT(this will exit you from the DiskPart program)
    · EXIT(this will exit you back to the Windows 7 install program)

I use Auslogics Disk Wiper....It came with Auslogics BoostSpeed so you may have pay. If you want free software I would go with something these guys are recommending.

The DOD standard for wiping HD's is 3 separate zeroings.

This is available on the best partition manager for Win7, free Partition Wizard bootable CD.

    Bleach makes a mess.

    Stealthy Boss,

Of course, this procedure will WIPE the ENTIRE DISK CLEAN!!!

Now if you only want to securely delete files, then
SDELETE from the SysInternals folk is excellent (and complies with DOS standards).

This is one of those threads where each person has thier preference for Programs.

    :)

As I posted previously I use Eraser.

Here are the reasons why this is what I use:

Erase unused Disk space on currently used HD
Erasing is done with any algorithm you want. It covers most all available.
Adds context menu to recycle bin and right click so you can erase specific files or everything in Recycle Bin
    It is free.
