    Morning Talker

I found this thread this morning. It pertains to Reg cleaners, showing that it is not just my opinion.

That's scary. I won't run the registry cleaner anymore I suppose. You said you haven't done so since Windows 98 I think it was and you're fine. So I suppose I should be fine as well.

If I don't clean the registry with CCleaner then I suppose there's really nothing more I need with it right? Like, I know it cleans other things up but I've found it annoying that it removes my saved passwords on Firefox every time I use it.

And thank you for the link.

Edit: I unchecked the options for CCleaner to remove my cookies that way I'll always have my saved passwords.

I thought CCleaner was really only good for cleaning the registry. Since it seems as though there could be problems that arise in using it then what settings should I use? What's the best and safe way to use CCleaner?

    Thank you for your time.

I think it wise that you are concered about the big investment in your computer, but Windows 7, unlike previous Windows does not need that much maintenance.

Stay away from the sites that you know are trouble
Have a good A/V and anti malware
    Fire wall
Format, not too often every 6 months, if you do not install and uninstall much
    Do a disk cleanup
    Do a disk chk
Dont tweek, unless you really know what you are doing
Dont load programs you will not use
Run AV scan and Malwarebytes once a week.
No need to use Ccleaner unless there is a problem

    Thats about it.

Alright, thank you very much. I will keep this information on my notepad until I've got it all down pat. (Pretty much know it already but I don't want to forget.)

I don't think I'm going to be formatting though. I mean, what if I erase something that I shouldn't? That would be terrible, haha. And what about my settings on Firefox and everything? They would be gone too.

I know you've done a lot but could you possible make a list of things that I should do before I do a format? That would be very helpful.

    Thank you! :)

Okay!! I gotcha. Thank you. I didn't want to format, hahaha. I have trouble with the little problems and formatting just seems to big for me. I fixed that minor error in my list. I will follow your instructions.

Is that everything I should know?

Edit: My defrag is on a schedule to run every Wednesday at 6pm and I believe my computer is on at that time. Should I turn the scheduler off? You said it doesn't really hurt the hard drives anymore though so it might not really matter whether it's on or off right?

One last question. I don't know if you saw it and already answered and I haven't made the connection yet or if you missed it by accident. So here it is:

Turn it off. It does not hurt but it is not necessary. I have defragged once since I got the OS in Oct

The need for defragging depends on how you use your computer. If you install and uninstall a lot of programs or create and delete a lot of files, you should probably run defrag on that schedule. I defrag about once a month.
