Red X on Disk Icon

I got a Red X on the Drive Icon. [Screenshot]
Fortunately, not on my C Drive. Phew !
It's on my new External HDD.

Ehh, but this thing is new and I just placed some stuffs..
But this X came when I first, again, FIRST plugged in the HDD.

So I had a little weird feeling, cause its scary..

Will simply changing the icon like this tutorial work?

Well i think it would get rid of the X, but
that won't solve the thing..

Before you go bandaid and change the disk Icon you should hook it up to a different computer and confirm that it's working ok and your data is intact... make an extra backup in a known-good space then format and test that drive again...

It may be purely some Win7 cosmetic screwiness... or it might be a sincere warning there are problems with the drive.

From your screenshot, it would appear as though drive J is a disconnected network drive, of which one of any number of factors can be involved:
  1. You are no longer connected to your network. Check your cabling is intact and properly connected. Although if you are still able to browse the internet, this scenario is unlikly
  2. The computer that is providing the network share is no longer connected. Check its cables are properly connected.
  3. The shared network resource is no longer available. This in itself can be caused by various factors, such as being physically disconnected, the share is no longer available, or permissions have been changed denying you access to the network resource.
Question: When you boot into windows, do you get a message in the lines of "Could not connect network drive"?
