My copy of Win7 expires on 2nd July!

I checked the Windows 7 FAQ and it specifically mentions that the beta will expire on 1st August.

But when I checked in winver.exe this is what I got:

I haven't activated Windows 7 yet, so is that why this is shown?

This is not the first time I have installed Windows 7. I had to reinstall it and in the previous installtion as well; which I had activated; the dialog said the same!

Or is it that the 30 days activation period counts; as in you have to wait for the 30 days to get over and then activate in order for the beta to last upto 1st August?

    Please help! Awaiting your replies!

    Thanks!

    hello Dragor1

    no this is correct...
this is what you call a timebomb which has been in beta and dev builds for a while now...
if you do a search for *time bomb* you can see this was discussed

if you want to read more on what a time bomb is then look here
(includes a example [vista beta 2])
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_bomb_(Software)

or if not then read this...
With or without a product key, all pre-release versions of Windows 7, but not earlier than the 6801 build, can only be used up until August 1, 2009. At this point the time bomb will activate and the prerelease of Windows 7 will stop working as per the End User License Agreement with Microsoft: “This software will stop running on August 1, 2009. You may not receive any other notice. You may not be able to access data used with the software when it stops running.”.
while it may apply to 6801 build change it to 7000 and the dates to the ones shown here in the winver and you will see it applies.....

But why 2nd July? Why not 1st August? The date is in DD-MM-YYYY format, right?

I mean, will my copy stop working after 2nd July or not?

I recently read a post about the 7032 build and the winver from there has the same expiration value as mine, or for that matter everyone elses!

I know about the whole Time Bomb thing. I'm just worried that it says 2nd July instead of 1st August.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

My copy of Win7 expires on 2nd July!-expire.png

as for why you says the 2nd is because of the time zone changes....
MS is using US timezone if i remember correctly...
    as to why the difference
well its in your regional settings...

    oops...
    misread your post...
yes it is going to expire by july....
but by that time a RC should be around the corner...

I am fairly sure that you will have 30 days from the expiry date to make arrangements to secure any data or prepare for upgrades to a newer build and then after that date the system will cease to boot.

What you need to know before installing the Beta

Thank you for participating in the Windows 7 Beta. To help make sure you have a great experience, please read this section before you install the software—even if you've previously been a beta tester.

    • The Windows 7 Beta is a pre-release version of Windows. While we consider this a stable and high-quality beta, it's not the finished product. It could crash your computer or cause you to lose important files or information.
    • The Beta will stop working on August 1, 2009. To continue using your PC, please be prepared to reinstall a prior version of Windows or a subsequent release of Windows 7 before the expiration date. You won't be able to upgrade from the Beta to the final retail version of Windows 7.
    • Important Note to Internet Explorer 8 Beta testers: If you're already testing Internet Explorer 8, please be aware that the version in the Windows 7 Beta is at a different stage of release. If you're beta-testing Windows 7, you need to use the version of Internet Explorer 8 that comes with it.

To learn more, see Windows 7 Beta: Frequently Asked Questions.

There are a lot of rumors going around that the RC will come out around April. If it's true or not....

The Beta will expire on Aug 1, but bi-hourly shutdowns will begin from July 1 ... or 2 depending on your time zone.
