Always ask

If one clears the ALWAYS ASK (when opening this type of file) check box,
how can that prompt later be restored? Gracie

Hello Borate,

This can help show you how to for "Open with".

Open With - Add or Remove "Always use selected program"

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Good info, but I should have been more specific...

It's the ALWAYS ASK prompt that appears when clicking on an
attachment to mail
that I want to restore (for .rtf files in this case).

In Windows XP, under Folder Options -> file types there was an
ADVANCED button to edit a file type association and re-enable the
"Confirm open after download" option.

Unfortunately, Folder Options tab was removed in Vista/W7, much
to the annoyance of many users. This was very useful. The Creative
Element's Power Tools provide the interface, but "confirm open"
appears not to be an option.

Is editing the registry the only viable way in W7 to restore the prompt?

Borate,

This is a uninversal setting for all "Open with" windows. You can use the REG file download in step 2 of OPTION TWO in the tutorial link above to restore this check box option automatically.

Well and good, but it's not the option to restore the check box UI that's desired.

Instead, it's the ability to restore the "ask" prompt (to an attachment), after it
was checked earlier, and no longer appears. The question is how to get it back...

Sorry Borate,

It seems that we misunderstood what you meant. The Switches for the Confirm.exe Tool section in the link below may be of help instead.
