My problem has now gone away. I was using AVG, and I'm now using avira antivirus - which I believe is as good/better than AVG (and also free). I also uninstalled a firefox extension which had put some options on the 'right click' menus, and uninstalled a couple of other things (but I (forget what)...of course I've no idea what 'solved' the problem which is frustrating.

    Resolved

Using Msconfig I shut down a number of services during startup. Appears that some HP services were causing the problem and not AVG. So after I replaced the video driver and then disabling a few startup services that will not be missed the Windows 7 laptop is running great. I'll play with it for a while and if it remains stable I will upgrade by production Vista machine.

    Rgiht Click

I hate to say it but disable all the third party apps in MSConfig and see if that addresses the problem. It's annoying but hey I just lost my Ubuntu computer due to a recent update and it knocked out the network driver. That ought be fun to troubleshoot! Welcome to the world of PCs

Then it is also causing the problem. Try reinstalling it, or removing it and using a different / no driver.

I am experiencing the same problem on my laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. I fixed it once by restoring to a prevous restore point, but the problem has returned. I am not using AVG or any Adobe apps except the flash and pdf readers.
