webplodder , here is a link to a file with the setup.exe file in it Download Realtek Gigabit Network PCIe Driver 7 v7.017.exe from General-Search.com it is from upload.com so you will have to wait 60 secs to enable to use the free download service

pebbly, the new driver was successfully installed from the above link. Thank you very much for your time and trouble. :)

I just wonder why I had so much trouble installing from the Realtek site, oh well.

try to unzip the file using windows native extactor instead of using winzip see if it enables you to extract it that way , what is the driver you are trying to extract? we may be able to find one elsewhere for you :)

Native extractor? How do I do that?

The updated driver is: Realtek Gigabit Ethernet PCI v7.017 (for WIN7).

here is a link to a newer version v7.018 Realtek :) give this one a try
Most times, you are far better off to go to the manufacture's website for drivers rather than a third party site or Windows Updates. I have a folder in my Bookmarks/Favorites with the links to the manufacturers' of each hardware device on my computer from the CPU to the adapters, hard drives, printer, etc.

I usually do not update unless I am experiencing a problem. Sometimes, I have found that the most current driver does not work as in the case with my video card. I had to install the third one on the list rather than the latest.
