An alternative may be tried . If the windows 7 partition is deleted using Partition Wizard Bootable CD , I hope there would not be any problem installing xp .
From what I find out you have Intel.

As you have Linux installed,
All Linux code must be deleted.
Disk - Clean and Clean All with Diskpart Command
Try a full clean & full format.
1) Boot DVD.
2) Press Shift+F10 (for command prompt)
Type in command line
DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK # (win HD)
CLEAN ALL
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
SELECT PARTITION 1
ACTIVE
FORMAT=NTFS
ASSIGN
EXIT
EXIT
