RC slow boot, BootSmssInitTime takes 160s

I have a brand new HP HDX18 laptop. After install Windows 7 and a set of softwares. I see booting takes 3 mins. From Event Viewer, I see BootSmssInitTime takes more than 160s. I tried all solutions, google SmssInit. Nothing fixes the issue.

I have no external drive. disable UAC (drop to lowest level), boot in safe mode ( also takes 3 mins to show log on UI ). Running out of ideas.

    Any help is appreciated.

Same problem - RC slow boot

I'm experiencing the same problem. This is taking several minutes longer than the presumably less optimized Beta (Build 7000). I even re-formatted the HD and reinstalled, thinking that the video driver update went wrong and was slowing startup, but it's the same thing immediately after installing the OS, before adding any additional drivers or programs. Something is wrong -- Win 7 can't be released with this level of performance.

    Solved my slow boot problem

After driving myself crazy -- including a repeat download of the iso and new install -- I finally figured it out. Most Internet entries on this problem focus on HD drive problems, usually changing the SATA interface settings. My experiments with beta operating systems are on an older machine which doesn't even have SATA, so that couldn't be it for me. But it did make me think that as well-behaved as build 7000 was, 7100 might need some of the original drivers. It took exactly one try to find which one -- in this case iata_enu.exe (which probably installed iastor.sys), having downloaded the correct version (there are many) for my specific motherboard from Intel. I installed as administrator (without any compatibility adjustments), rebooted and my boot went from 6 -8 minutes to under 30 seconds.

As Jerry Pournelle likes to say, it's one of those things I knew, but needed to be reminded about.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I just returned HP laptop because it died after 3 days, no longer boot. I didn't figure out a resolution for slow boot before return. But it is likely what you said here SATA problem. I would like to try it out next time.
