System freezes when viewing pictures

Hi everyone, I'm new here, (just registered because I can't fix this lol)
My fiance`s computer is a Sony Vaio Desktop Model VGC-RA830G. Recently it got a pretty bad virus, and I did a reformatted and installed Windows 7 professional that I had downloaded from the MSDNA website. Whenever we try to view pictures, windows explorer completely locks up.

The Windows upgrade adviser stated that the Multimedia Video Controller was not compatible.
I spent a good bit of time on the phone with NVIDIA earlier today, and they assured the driver I had (8.17.11.9745) was correct for this computer, and my problem would be fixed. But the problem seems to have gotten worse.
I read on numerous forums about similar problems but cannot find a solution.

I tried to set the view to list instead of thumbnails (another forum user said that fixed his their problem) but did not make a difference.

Any help on this would be GREATLY appreciated, seeing how Sony wanted $40 dollars before they would even talk to me, and Microsoft wanted $140...soooooo..yea...

Is it the Windows Photo Viewer thats causing the issue or Explorer itself?

Just a guess here, but:
have you ran the Windows Color Calibration tool?
Some systems can have a issue where Windows Color Calibration causes a similar problem.

If you have ran this, try deleting the Windows Calibrated.ICC in color management & set to default.

have you tried Picasa, it has it has its own photo viewer you can replace windows photo viewer as default.

It's just Explorer that is locking up. She explained to me that when she opens her Photos folder, and start scrolling through the thumbnails as they're loading, it locks up. I read that changing the display of the thumbnails to icons fixes this, but to no avail.

I ran the color calibrate tool and deleted the .icc file that was created and now windows failed to start.. was this a cruel joke or something? I'm really trying to get this thing fixed.

No I haven't, but I'm definitely going to look into it after this

Yeah Picasa, is way better than windows explorer. :)

No. Not a joke.

Sometimes with some configurations, if you had previously ran the calibration, photo view is really slow and would lock up.
By deleting the color profile it makes, "windows Calibrated....."
and setting the color profile to default would fix it.

Ok, Maybe I deleted the wrong file. Windows fixed the error and is running again..
Do I have the file path correct?

drivers
colors - and the .icc file was in here.. is this wrong.. if so please correct me!! Thank you for the help btw!!
and not to sound ignorant, but how do I set the color profile to default?
