I had the exact problem and installing this optional update fixed it.
Too bad that microsoft didn't include it by default.

You looked in the correct place.
The screen saver does not work when you use a Microsoft wireless pointing device on a Windows Vista-based computer is the article that will tell you exactly the same thing you've done. Plug in your keyboard/mouse and then run windows updates. Make sure you check the optional updates also! As Marko from Tropoja said... Good Luck... (as a side note, you can always go into the device manager and right click on a specific device and tell it to update the device driver)
When I go into Windows Update, it says that there are no new updates. There is no option showing to get optional updates either!
I was having the same problem....no screen saver.....I unplugged my Microsoft Wireless Mouse and Bam !! my Screen Saver is back working fine.
Hopefully on the next few updates...Microsoft will fix the problem.
Just to let everyone know...I just installed the newest updates from Microsoft this morning and now my wireless mouse does not lock up my screen saver !!
