Screen Saver won't start in build 7100 (RC)

As the subject says. I cannot get the screen saver to start automatically after the time specified. Any ideas on this people?

Which screensaver? Built-in ones? They start for me and I also use DreamAquarium and it starts fine.

Yeah, either the build in ones or Dream Aquarium. None work. And neither does the photo slideshow screensaver in Media Center.

    This is frustrating.

    Search your harddrive for
    *.scr
then right click any file, then click TEST.
See if they work. If they don't, well, do a clean install.
If they do, then find out what is starting up at boot time. Something is re-directing the call. Sometimes things like wireless mouse will send signal to the OS that a movement has occurred (driver update). Media Center may be causing it also. Look around.

    Hi wguimb,

    - Screensavers do work when doing a test or preview.
    - I've got a Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000 (bluetooth mouse and keyboard), and am running with their beta drivers for W7. Used these same drivers under build 7000 and Vista, and screensaver worked fine then.
    - I've tried shutting down Media Center and turning off both the mouse and keyboard, but screensavers still do not start automatically.

Please tell me more about the boot time check. How do I check this and what should I be looking for?

I recommend you still do a clean install as you probably haven't been running 7100 for more than a few days. You should make or have a backup of your stuff first though.

If you want to play around with it, just run msconfig from the start menu. The first tag you can change the general boot options to start up with or without certain programs and services. Diagnostic or Selective. Try Diagnostic first and see if the screensaver works. Try that and then gradually add services or startup items.

I did a clean install of 7100 when it was first leaked a week ago, and don't want to go through the set up again if I can help it. What could have gone wrong with that install to stop the SS from working?

I'll try the msconfig thing as that seems the easier option at present. Thanks for your help.

Ok, using MSCONFIG I've managed to narrow the issue down to two pieces of offending software which runs at start up. They are:

    DVBDream and MS Intellitype

I use DVBDream to decode my satellite pay TV (legitimately - paid for). This same software did not prevent the screensavers from starting in build 7000.

MS Intellitype is the control software for my MS bluetooth keyboard. This is beta software for Windows 7, and again was running just fine with screensavers in build 7000. Interestingly the MS Intellipoint software which controls my MS bluetooth mouse does not prevent screensavers from starting.

I guess I'll let MS and the DVBDream authors know...

    Found a fix

    Hi,

It appears that you need to install an optional update that will kill the problem. Look for "Microsoft driver update for HID Non-User Input Data Filter" under optional components.

The same problem existed in Vista...
    Hope it helps.

Yeah, agree with the last guy, my other friend had the same issue, it was his mouse/kb that was stopping it from turning on. I'll find out from him what he had to do to fix it.
