A 3G PC Build: The AfterMath

So on the 27th of this month 2 years ago I completed my first build. The total came out to be $3,183.00 and it has treated me well but now that I am enrolled and school and do not game much anymore i am wondering whether I would be better off selling my whole build, leaving me stuck with my sh!tty Hp Pavilion dv4 laptop, or whether I should take the time to upgrade it so it is more up to date. With that said I know that upgrading it will cost a pretty penny and this is while I have no job so that would be something i would have to figure out.

Basically what it comes down to, is it worth putting in the money to upgrade certain components? Or should I just pass it on to someone who could get more use out of it?

    Here's the specs:
    Case: Thermaltake M9 VI1000BWS Mid-Tower
(Plus a 12" cold cathode neon light) like 10$
    CPU: (Quad-Core) Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 @ 3.00GHz 1333FSB 12MB L2 Cache 64-bit
CD: LG 20X DVD R/RW + CD-R/RW Drive Dual Layer
    CD2: 16X DVD Rom
FlashMedia: Internal 12in1 Flash Media Reader/Writer
    Fan: Thermaltake V1 CPU Cooler
    HDD: Raid-0 10,000 RPM 2 WD Velociraptor's
Motherboard:Asus Striker II Formula nForce 780i SLI Mainboard
    Memory: 8G Corsair Dominator DDR2
Network: Intel Pro gigabite 10/100/1000 Network Card
PowerSupply:1,000 Watts Power Supply Thermaltake Tough Power
Sound: Creative Labs X-FI XtremeGamer 24-Bit PCI Sound Card
Display: Silverstone eudemon sst-fp52 LCD Display (This thing blows)
    Video: Nvidia 9800 GX2 1GB 16x PCI Express

And that pretty much sums it up.

    Thanks

You need to upgrade that? This build is more than enough for another two years.

I don't see where you would really upgrade much. I just built a machine in July of 2009 and used an Q9550 CPU, 8GB of RAM and an Nvidia 9800GTX+...the only area where I outperform your build is my SSD drive....and my box is stellar for me. Of course, it cost me about 1/3 of what you spent since 2 years has passed.

Your entire conundrum has me confused. First you say that you aren't gaming and don't really take advantage of your box. But then you say, it's either upgrade this or stick with my crappy laptop. I'm confused as to how this desktop is not leaps and bounds better than your crappy laptop as it stands. Why would you have to upgrade it to make it more appealing then a crappy laptop?

If you want to, you can get the new edition Velociraptors. Get an SSD, or get a new graphics cards. Otherwise everything else will last like said, another two years.

Your build outperforms my 1 month old build. If anything, you could sell it and build something that would be smaller, but still much better than your laptop.

Essentially I have a pc which has been awesome but since looking at new graphic cards etc I'm wondering if there is a point in upgrading it if a few things her and there would put it in the field of new top of the line builds. My laptop isn't crappy, it's just had a significant amount of problems for not even being a year old (In other words I'll never buy anything from HP again).

I just use my xbox for gaming since basically all games are on most, if not all platforms where as when I was originally gaming it was when Medal Of Honor was the big thing then CoD etc... Now Modern Warfare is on 360 and pc, I'm sure pc wouldn't have as many 12 year olds that scream and it's most likely more aesthetically pleasing as far as graphics go. But if I'm not really gaming then would it be beneficial to keep my build another two years till its a fraction of what it costs?

Not really sure if that makes things clearer or most confusing.

That's probably the most frequent idea that keeps reoccurring in my head. It was awesome having a top of the line build but I'm just not gunna have the money to keep up with top of the line. I know I could and should settle for less but I have OCD so its like an itch that can't get scratched otherwise.
