[RC Build 7100] Shutdown issues

I had to Google the Q6600, because I don't use Intel CPU's. Never did!
That's a very high end and very specific cpu and requires a very specific bios.
There's nothing 'Garden Variety' about it.

But CPU aside, no two mobo's are exactly alike and every mobo has a bios specially written for it.

In the above mentioned case the bios may not be the problem at all, but it's foolish to just discount that, off hand, as it actually may enter into the problem. DO, check for bios updates for that board.

And yes, there are a bunch of less than pure, copies of Win-7 floating around.
I guess I lucked out with mine. It just works great.

The Q6600 is totally mainstream and belongs to the quad-core family - that and the Q6700 are two of the most common CPUs here (the UK) at the moment.

I agree, I think it'll be a BIOS issue. I'm runnign a Q6700 with an ASUS board, and I'm also runig a QX9750 with another Asus board. In fact all my desktops and servers are Asus, and all shut down hapily.

I know that the Intel Quad Core CPU's are popular with the home PC builders, but I'm not seeing that many coming out of the Big Box Stores.

Most brand name computers are still coming out with dual core Intels and a lot of AMD's.

Going way back in History, circa 1980, several companies were writing bios chips for the IBM XT mobo. That was my first mobo and I tested several different bios chips, to find one that booted up the fastest. All the bios chips I tested worked fine on that board, but there was a huge difference in the boot time. I finally settled on the Erso Bios, as the fastest.

Over the years, even up to my current MSI mobo, I've always tried to keep the bios up to date. Ya just never know, when the update may solve some weird problem.

Agreed, it's incredible how the same chip can perform in different boards and with different BIOS.

I tend to only update BIOS when I have a problem (I've had my fingers burned in the past and had to roll back) but in this case I suggest the OP tries to find a mroe recent BIOS. If nothing else, it'll either fix it or rule it out.

I thought that, but wasn't going to say it (yet).

But since Win-7 is really Vista with a tummy tuck and botox, it should run on any mobo that works OK with Vista Ultimate 64.
"Should" being the key word. Again, I take nothing for granted. I suspect everything and test everything before ever trusting it.

I've been pushing Win-7 Ultimate 64 to the breaking point.
Last night I fired up five scanners, to run simultaneously, and Win-7 took it in stride. So far I've seen no bsod's and I've had NO lock-ups.
It just runs and runs and runs.....no matter what I throw at it.
And when I'm all done, it shuts down in about five seconds, from my Quick Shutdown shortcut.

Most amazing was that it picked up all my internal hardware without me ever having to load the first driver. Video, sound and LAN, all worked perfectly.
The drivers for my two Epson printers and my ZOOM External modem all work just fine with Win-7.

Yep, pretty much the same here.

On my HP nw9440 laptop I get three unknown devices (smartcard reader, modem, and Mobile Data Protection sensor) but in each case I just install the Vista x64 drivers.

On my desktop (Asus P5-WDG2 WS Pro) all the devices are recognised automatically, no drivers to load (with Vista I had 5 or 6 to load).

And you're right, it just works! Never before have I been brave enough to use a RC as my main OS on my work laptop, but I'm happily using the RC and have faith in it.

It's good to see that alot of people are interested in this problem.

So far I haven't solved my problem and it starts to irritate me that I have to manually shut down the PC by pressing and holding the power button.

As for my computer, I bought it at a store here in the Netherlands called Paradigit. Back then (I think like 2 years ago) it was a brand new system with the latest specs. I didn't put the configuration together either (like I used to do..), it was a complete prebuild configuration. I haven't checked wich MOBO is installed but I assume it's an ASUS mobo. (IMO the best brand).

I also never did a MOBO update, i'm going to check that tommorrow.
