For starters close all open windows before you shut down. Do you see a message during the shut down??

Make a desktop shortcut to shutdown and include a switch that forces all open apps to shut down without warning.

Just right click the desktop, New, Shortcut, type:

    Shutdown -f

Shutdown -f closes any open programs without warning.

Now instead of shutting down the usual way, just use that shortcut to shutdown. If the error stops it means some program wasnt shutting down properly on occasion.

this may be a VERY old thread, but I think I have found a possible explanation. Computer does not shut down properly if Selective Suspend is enabled this may not be the problem, but it's worth a try
