So I recently installed windows 7 on my laptop that was previously running Vista. After the installation I have been hearing the fan run much louder than it was before. Is there any way to fix this problem since it is quite annoying. Thanks in advance.
There are probably several little pieces of hardware on the laptop that had specific Vista drivers that have not had drivers for 7 installed. Fan control is a pretty common one.
See if your laptop manufacturer has 7 drivers for that model (Unfortunately rare).
You can also try to look for and install some Vista drivers that you may be able to get from the manufacturers web page. (Of course they may not work at all or break something).
Updating a laptop to a newer OS than when it was built is always a bit of a struggle. If the fan going full blast all the time is the /only/ thing that isn't working, your doing pretty good :)

Just to expand on what fseal suggests about finding a Vista driver, if you try to use one you may have to run it in compatibility mode for Vista; be sure to post back to keep us informed.

Go to HP® - Laptops, Desktop, Printers, Servers, and more
You will find a area right there to put dv6917cl and it will take you to the driver download page. Just select the OS you are useing and it will show you all the drivers they have.
Also be sure to run windows update it may find a driver or 2 that can help.
If the drivers don't fix it, try the variable fan speeds offered by Speedfan.

Thanks for the input. I went to the HP download page and installed the drivers that they offered. It did not seem to have much of an effect on the heating or the fan noise. Everything with the OS is going well however the fan is very annoying and I do not want to lower the speed as I believe it will make the computer overheat.If there is anything else that I can do to reduce the heat or lower the fan noise without detrimental effects please let me know. Thanks.
You can use a laptop cooling pad which will fit on the bottom of your machine and keep it cool as well, when the system is cooler the fan will automatically run slower and will not have any adverse effect
If this is still a brand new install, the fan may be working overtime if your hard drive is still indexing. The increased usage of the HDD will raise system temps, causing the fan to kick in more often.
