    Mystery Problem: Resume from Sleep

Okay so i'm just going to throw this problem out there. It's a strange one and I haven't heard of other people having it but i'm hoping someone will know something.

Occasionally when I wake up in the morning (I think the computer has gone to sleep overnight), turn on my screens and try to get Windows 7 to respond, nothing happens. The computer is running and the displays are getting a signal (I don't get the "No Signal Input" from them) but they appear to be suspended. No form of mashing on keys or anything will cause the monitors to respond.

Here is where things get really weird. When I force a shutdown (hold the power button until it turns off) the monitors still do not respond upon reboot. It is only when I physically unplug my computer and reseat the graphics card (Geforce 9800 GT) that the displays will respond again.

I know this doesn't sound like a Windows 7 problem but it has only occured with the builds of Windows 7 I have installed. I have no such problems with Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Ubuntu running on this hardware.

Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated because other than this potentially show-stopping issue, i'm loving Windows 7....

I am having the same issue. I have a GA-EP35C-DS3R motherboard, E7400, 8600 GTS, and 4 gigs of memory. Vista, Ubuntu, etc sleep and resume from sleep fine - did a clean install of 7 RC and it will sleep by the keyboard button, but if i let the timer put it to sleep after x minutes, the computer stays on and the monitor goes off, the green light on the case goes off, but the HDD activity light stays on. I reloaded Vista just to make sure i was not crazy and it is working fine with Vista x64.

Is anyone else having a similar problem? Is there a solution?

I absolutely love Windows 7 but this is quite a big issue for me. I have a Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R motherboard I believe and a 9800 GT video card...

Hi, check all your add-on cards including usb for "let this device wake computer" in the device settings.
This is probably the cause of your problems. :)

Back in Windows XP this was usually caused by video drivers. But with the advances in Power Management in Vista and then in Windows 7 - there's more to it than just this.

From a bug report that I submitted, a Microsoft employee suggested that Storage Drivers also play a critical role in this function now.

Previous discussions about the Win7 OS tend to reveal that it's the lower level stuff (such as Storage Drivers) that may have compatibility issues with Win7 despite the efforts to make Win7 compatible with Vista drivers.

So, I'd locate the latest video drivers and the latest storage drivers for your system. Then uninstall the one's that you have, then install the latest ones.

If they are Vista drivers, install them using compatibility mode FOR ALL USERS, selecting "Run as Windows Vista" and "Run as administrator".

If it still doesn't work (as is my case), then it's likely to be an incompatibility with the drivers. I contacted the manufacturer of my storage card and was told that they had no plans to support Win7 with that card - so I ordered another one that does have Win7 drivers.

I am having the same issue. I have a GA-EP35C-DS3R motherboard, E7400, 8800 GTS, and 4 gigs of memory. &127 is the build. I have had the same issue on all builds. The only differance in symptoms for me is this; if I let the machine sleep, then I cannot wake it with keyboard, mouse, or power buttons on pc. Only way to get it powered on again is to take out the power lead from pc - then put it back in and repower - but here is the funny thing; once I have done that it goes straight back to the log in screen, with all users logged in as before and with all apps running as before, and that is after physically removing hte power lol!

I have verified my power options were correct etc; have ended up disabling sleep mode now though until resolved.

I am also running Gigabyte P35 MBs and have had a number of sleep related problems. I have fixed most of them.

    First. Not sleeping.

If on a network, disable WOL or set to magic packet. Pattern matching will cause wake up on a ping or netbios request from another device or computer.

Just after the initial install, sleep seems not to happen. My theory is that the initial search and superfetch routines want to complete. It seems you can force a sleep, but, the machine will not go to sleep on its own. After a night, I never had any problems automatically going to sleep.

Media Center. When media center is open and playing live tv, radio, music or video, the machine will not go to sleep.

Not waking up - never had this problem.

Other wakeup problems. (BSOD, Drives or devices not found, Explorer hangs, and a bunch of other issues on wakeup). These were never consistent, but ranged from 4x per day to 1 time per week.

I found that these where mostly related to configuration errors on my part (with the exception of an occaisional BSOD with 7127)

First off, I run a standard configuartion across my machines. Two physical hard drives, each with two partitions. I used to dual boot, and i think this is the root of some of my problems.

To get it to work 100%, I found that the OS had to be installed on Logical drive 0 of Physical drive 0. and that this also had to be the boot, system, active, and paging partition. If any of these functions were on a different logical partition random problems on wakeup would occur.

The next thing was that I had to make sure that the bios was configured to look at the proper boot driver first. If it was mis configured, it would always boot properly, but would not wake properly.

    Mark

Also note: Impressions of builds I have installed.

7100 x86. Like it a lot but had problems with print spooler on network printers, no PAL TV out. Wake and sleep bugs fixed following above

7127 x86. Liked it a lot - seemed faster than 7100. able to resolve wake & sleep issues (for the most part). No TV or print spooler issues. However, could not get rid of a once every 3 or 4 day BSOD on wake.

7137 x86. Did not use much - seemed to be sluggish compared to 7100 and 7137. A number of small bugs of which I have forgotten.

7201 x86. Liked a lot - very smooth and fast on 2 Gig RAM. No problems.

7201 x64 Liked it a lot - slower than 7201 x86 with 2 Gig RAM. On upgrade to 4 Gig RAM, it flies.

    IMO, run 7201 x86 with 2GIG and 7201 x64 with 4 Gig or more.

I can go to sleep just fine on my computer, but when I wake my computer up, the mouse isn't working. Everything else (monitor, keyboard), works fine. I was forced to use Alt-F4 to restart my computer. Anyone know how to fix this?

No, it's more likely that no-one bothers to report it. I myself have the same problem with my Windows 7 / Core i7 920 / P6T Deluxe V2 motherboard setup, it goes to sleep fine and never wakes up. If I press the space bar or power button to wake up the PC, the fans spin at high speed but no display, I end up resetting the PC with the reset button.

I think it's more of a motherboard problem than the operating system, as I've tried Windows XP x64 and Vista x64, both exhibited the same behaviour. In the latest version of the BIOS for my motherboard there was supposed to be a fix for the sleep issue, it specifically listed it in the change log, no matter which O.S. it still doesn't wake up properly.

I also have the P6T Deluxe v2 mobo (with the i7 920) and have the latest BIOS update - still no joy! That's how my problem started, then the fans stopped spinning also (when I was updating the mobo drivers and the RAID drivers).

I filed a bug report at the Connect website about this, and it's now waiting for me to install another RAID card (one that has Win7 drivers). I just received my new RAID controller today (and it has Win7 drivers), so I'll be replacing it shortly and will report if that helps out.
