Mike -

Are you looking for the Intel X48 chipset?

Are you sure the Dell chipset installed? Check your Sata or IDE controller Driver to see. If you installed it in Vista compatibility mode, try reinstalling it in normal mode.

You may be finding out why they aren't supporting WIn7 on a Core2Duo machine.

How exactly did the chipset given by the installer perform compared to Dell's so far?

Things just got much worse. There was a windows update that I installed and when it rebooted it said there is no boot drive. Boot order now only lists items that are not present. Do you think I should start agian from scratch and install the OS again?

Its worth a shot to start from scratch and re-install the OS again. but before you start again do checks and make sure the OS is fine. it could be the OS system that is causing the problem.

Do you recall what the windows update was or was it a mass collection of updates?

I was just a single update but I didnt look to see what it was.

Can someone confirm the only way out of this is to reformat and reinstall? Given it hasn't gone very well that seems the best course but will try and take a system image striaght after installation.

Thought I would start the reinstallation but actually it booted from the DVD. Told me copy of windows wasnt genuine but managed to valid it . Went to Del ldownloaded chipset driver and reinstalled without using compability mode. Rebooted without DVd and booted fine so at least back to where we were (Maybe I hadnt rebooted after the chipset install first time?)

I just dont understnad which of the 30 entries under System Deives in Device manager i am meant to look at to see if the driver was updated? There are 3 that begin Intel X38/X48 Express Chipset and all are 2006 Microsft drivers. I dont see anything called SATA or IDE controller? so currently I can't tell if the Dell chipset was installed or not.

I'm sure Greg posted a tool for finding out the exact chipset model, but cant find it anywhere. Is my earlier psot on the driver I found on the Intel site the right thing i.e. an INF file?

It says Intel (4) Series Chipset V9.0.0.1007 26/3/08. On Intel web site I have found this, but not sure it is right thing?

INF Update Utility - Primarily for Intel® 5, 4, 3, 900 Series ChipsetsTo begin the download process, click Download.
For additional details about this download, click Read Me or Release Notes (not available for all downloads).

Intel® Chipset Device Software is the new name for the Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility; this name will be seen when running the installation package.

The Intel® Chipset Device Software installs the Windows* INF files. An INF is a text file that provides the operating system with information about a piece of hardware on the system. In the case of the current Intel Chipset Device Software, that information is primarily the product name for the piece of hardware. This allows the operating system to show the correct name for that piece of hardware in Device Manager.

**Important**
The Intel Chipset Device Software does not install drivers for AGP or USB. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS UTILITY IF YOUR DEVICE MANUFACTURER IS RECOMMENDING IT TO CORRECT AN "AGP DRIVER," "AGP GART," OR "USB DRIVER" ISSUE; IT WILL NOT CORRECT YOUR ISSUE.

I told you earlier you have the Intel X48 chipset - it is on your model's Dell specs page: http://www.dell.com/us/en/dfh/deskto...30&cs=22&s=dfh

It sounds like the Dell chipset wasn't installed properly before.

Before you go looking for for another chipset from Intel, what is the performance like now with Dell's chipset working?

Check optional Windows Updates again to see if any other drivers are cued.

Check the Event Viewer>Admin View to see what the problem was with the failed Update, plus google any other repeat Errors to find how others have solved them. This is how you troubleshoot these errors through to resolution over time.
