Sounds like the baseline chipset driver decided to not be happy with it. As Greg pointed out, download the Vista x32/64 (Depending on which install you did) driver and install that, repeat the backup process and see if that has improved. I would also note the chipset Dell says it is for their driver, and possibly look and see if there is a Win 7 Driver out there from the manufacturer. Dell tends to gravitate towards Intel or nVidia based bored. Since it was mentioned intel, more than likely, see if you can find the intel drivers from intel for that particular model, but again, verify the chipset for your model and get accordingly if the ones Dell has doesn't work as nicely.

Worse case scenario, depending on how old that XPS system is, it might be a faulty board given your previous mention of having problems with it with Vista prior to all of this. Not knowing the full history, can't be sure.

The windows up date installed a recent ATI driver for my adapter.

For chipset I have the driver from Dell for Vista 64 bit so selected compatabilty Vista SP2 and installed it. Will rerun backup

How do I find the chipset model in order to look for somethnig from Intel? so many items in device manager I dont know which to look at.

When in doubt, since it is a Dell machine, look at what drivers they provide for the system. From those drivers, you can get the Readme from them which should state what model it is for, and you can look up the manufacturer and model drivers for that. That is what I do to update drivers that Dell stops doing.

Could the HD not be good enough for an OS? I bought this one from Dell just to back up my photos on. Restarted and launched backup and I have a blank window and spinning blue circle. Disc icon flashing but cant access anything. Came home 3 hours later and still stuck!

I now have no system restore points. Was that caused by updating the chipset driver? I had 5 earlier.

Updating the chipset driver would not erase restore points, only messed up shadow copy attempts.

Roll back the chipset components on Device Driver tab if they caused this latest problem. Look for others.

Trying each availabe chipset until you get the best possible performance will help tell you whether this mobo can indeed handle it.

Where I am confused is that this is much worse than the situation I had before . This pc was doing daily backups with no roblem before.

Dumb question where do I find the Readme for the chipset driver I got from Dell so I know what the model number is to go to the manufacturers website?

When you get the Dell version of the driver, it will generally be in a self-extracting archive. Note the Number it assigns, like R349824.exe or something like that... When you run that self-extracting archive, it will generally default with wanting to extract to the following path:

    c:\Dell\Drivers\R349824

Go into that directory, and generally the files should be there, there might be a readme.txt, or some sort of .txt file in there... sometimes, you may have to use Notepad to look at some .ini file... Or simply running the setup program it has will have it in the setup screen itself.

Now I am sorry it seems like things are getting worse, but the problem is, that for me, I generally just do it and look at what happens. If it has an issue, I try something else. But since you are not me, and probably haven't been through this sort of thing yourself, I can imagine the frustration you are having.

The important thing is to stay calm. Second worst case scenario is that you end up having to just wipe and reinstall. Worst Case scenario might involve the fire department. So right now, we haven't hit those scenarios yet. Just take a moment and take the steps on at a time.

It says Intel (4) Series Chipset V9.0.0.1007 26/3/08. On Intel web site I have found this, but not sure it is right thing?

INF Update Utility - Primarily for Intel® 5, 4, 3, 900 Series ChipsetsTo begin the download process, click Download.
For additional details about this download, click Read Me or Release Notes (not available for all downloads).

Intel® Chipset Device Software is the new name for the Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility; this name will be seen when running the installation package.

The Intel® Chipset Device Software installs the Windows* INF files. An INF is a text file that provides the operating system with information about a piece of hardware on the system. In the case of the current Intel Chipset Device Software, that information is primarily the product name for the piece of hardware. This allows the operating system to show the correct name for that piece of hardware in Device Manager.

    **Important**
The Intel Chipset Device Software does not install drivers for AGP or USB. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS UTILITY IF YOUR DEVICE MANUFACTURER IS RECOMMENDING IT TO CORRECT AN "AGP DRIVER," "AGP GART," OR "USB DRIVER" ISSUE; IT WILL NOT CORRECT YOUR ISSUE.

    Thanks Mike
