Ok, according to the XML, it is looking for an icon file called CANON_iP4700_series.ico. But the one that you put in was called device.ico.

So there's two solutions (and you may have guessed them at this point )
1. Rename the device.ico file that you copied from your other printer to CANON_iP4700_series.ico
2. Edit the XML and change the string to look for device.ico instead.

The very last string on the XML is the one that you want to change (or copy the name from)
<DeviceIconFile>CANON_iP4700_series.ico</DeviceIconFile>

Didn't work Tim. Tried both ways, zilch. Tried uninstall/reinstall again and funnily enough, now the icon in printers & devices is the "new folder" type of icon Bugger it, the gremlin's won but at least everything is aok and working Thanks for your time and help.

Try creating a new account with the same access rights as the one you are now using, probably Administrator.
Login with the new account and see what it shows for printer icons.

If that works then you can keep the new account and copy everything over from the old account, test for awhile then delete the old account. Brink has a tutorial for doing this but I can't find it for some reason.

Even if you don't keep the new account, it will tell you if the problem is with the account or Windows 7 OS. You can always delete the new account if you don't want to keep it. Just do this as a test.

Hmmm. This is a nutty one

You could try to use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove anysoftware associated with the printer, then ensure that it is uninstalled and physically remove any remaining folders. Then re-install it. This should mean that all registry settings and folders are rewritten.

I'm away all day, will check with you when I get back.

Good Luck.

PS: Also Ztruker's advice is good

EDIT: After you've uninstalled everything, go back and check that all the schema (xml and ico stuff) is gone, if not remove it before you reinstall the printer.

Tim,
Tried the WICU, deleted everything completely before reinstall with no luck.

Ztruker,
Interesting.....started another user account and walaah, icon returns! Not being the sharpest tool in the shed, what does that mean? The OS is OK, right?
My analogy would be the icon on the wall in the room should always be there no matter which door you came through??

In regards to your question to Ztruker, it depends on:
- User settings
- User permissions
- User program/registry settings
- User Icon database

Funnily enough I lost two icons this morning, VMWARE and SKYPE. So with a similar error to play with and already an idea of what we've had a look at. I have two more solutions.
1. After a bit of mucking around, I deleted the icon catch and this worked for me.
navigate to here %userprofile%\appdata\local and delete iconcache.db this is a hidden file so you'll need to enable hidden files from the tools menu (options tab) first. I rebooted, but a log off on on should work just as well.
2. Also given the results of Ztrukers test above, you may also want to magnify your display as this forces a rebuild of the icon cache (as it tries to find bigger icons). Reboot and test, if it works then change it back, reboot and check.

Alternatively you can follow through with the rest of Ztrukers suggestion and migrate all of your user data to your new profile. If you go with this and need help, I'm happy to help.

This is an epic bigger than Ben Hur!
No Tim, I had deleted the icon cache previously...and just did it again and also tried the magnification trick but noooooo luck.
Not too sure re the second account route, it's something I'm not familiar with and let's face it, "if it aint broke, don't fix it". As I said, everything is working OK so I'll just leave sleeping pups lie I think. Ironic how you got a similar problem, aye?

A better analogy would be the icon on the wall in one room is okay, but the icon representing the same thing in another room (different account) is corrupted. Each account represents a different room where information and pointers to common or unique data is stored.

Definitely agree that if this is the only problem you are having it's not worth moving to a new account, but keep it around as an option if other strange things start happening.

Yep, the irony, it's happened to me three times this year.... I guess that some of these forums are contagious.

If I reinstall doesn't fix it now after all the changes we've made, then I leaving it or the secondary user are all we have left.
