simpod: I agree with you on all fronts, as I mentioned in my post that I do understand the advantages of win7. The question is just whether these advantages are strong enough for me to shuttle a month's worth of my savings to get it. :)

patio: Thanks for that. I really was going to try and get the trial version to see how I like it, but I posted this question to see if I can get some advice from someone who is knowledgeable about the interactions of hardware and software, to maybe give me a hint as to whether performance would really be bumped up by getting this upgrade.

That said, for the trial version, what would you recommend...
    1. 32bit or 64 bit? (I saw the FAQ, sadly that's too technical for me)
    2. Virtual machine or dual boot?

    thanks all.
What motherboard do you have ? If it will accept 4gb Ram Memory or more Win7 64bit would be an excellent trial or to upgrade to when you are really ready.

I would go with a dual boot partition if you want to use the Win7 Enterprise trial

In other words, if you are already considering it and you will have the money at some point, then yes, do it. But, telling people to wait cause it's only bells and whistles, is not the right answer.

His XP system will be as secure as Windows 7 "IF" he uses prudence when surfing, updates his security software and Windows updates. I don't know why you would want someone to abandon XP when as others have posted, "Windows 7 is nice, but not worth spending the money if the budget is tight".

To add to what others have said. My advice is stick with your needs----not your wants. Oh yeah---and pay off your credit card each month!

Your turn to---you can nudge him again if you like.

Uhhhh,,, no,, it is not!! You are absolutley 100% completely wrong.

Returning from Windows Vista are Kernel Patch Protection, Service Hardening, Data Execution Prevention, Address Space Layout Randomization, and Mandatory Integrity Levels
Not to mention AppLocker if you get Ultimate. As well as Bitlocker in Ultimate, if you decide to use it.

Windows 7 Security is leaps and bounds beyond what XP could ever hope or dream to be.
There are so many improvements to security overall in Win 7 that it takes a book to actually explain them all.

Also, the Windows 7 Firewall is far superior out of the box, and is far more configurable than XP's. As well as some decent parental controls that are not available in XP, that do not need to be used just cause you have kids.

I think someone has some research to do, it ain't me.

I blame a user's negligence on infections, not the OS. Guess you need to learn to read between the lines a little. lol

However Tedid, I can see you want to argue in a forum---not my cup-of-tee. You can point out all the safeguards of W7 you like and all the weaknesses of XP. How do people get infected? They go where they shouldn't go on the Internet, use P2P software yada yada....that was my inference.

Be sure to post the last word after my post...

"I blame a user's negligence on infections, not the OS." So does that mean win98 is also as safe as win 7? :)

    Maybe this will help...

BTW, I am not arguing anything. I am simply pointing out where you are wrong in your statements. Win XP is no where near as Secure as win 7, which makes your statement 100% wrong. Otherwise, prove it. Just cause you try to stay safe in surfing, doesn't mean you will stay safe when reading Emails or clicking a link on a hijacked web site, or going to a well known site and getting hit by a drive-by ad that isn't supposed to be there.
And not all Anti-Virus programs will save you from everything. With Win 7, you stand a better chance now than with XP. Plain and Simple.
