Windows 7: stuck on Read only

stuck on Read only

I'm trying to setup WoW on my new computer with windows 7 but everytime I run it it tells me it needs permission to write to its own folder, s I go to the folder it needs, and disable "read only", I select the only option it will give me, "apply to all sub folders" and that should work, or at least it would have back in XP.

When I return to the file properties, "read Only" is once again enabled. I have taken ownership of not only the file but all within it at least 3 times. I tried the windos solution of using the command line but to no avail.

Does anyone have any solution? please? anyone?

Or can someone at least explain why windows would abandon such a well developed OS as XP rather than just update it?

Folders don't have read only. Right-click WoW shortcut and select "Run as Administrator" you might only need to do this once.

Folders do have read only, its a tool added by windows to affect all files within it in one swoop for things like Wow (120+ files in 36 folders). I ran it as administrator, got the same message and everything is still read only.
does anyone else see the flaw in having to run something as an administrator when you already are the administrator?

Google yields quite a few hits for this problem: wow read only windows 7

One of them may help.

*facepalms* if everything is now read only it is because you messed with it. Read only was not the problem, you had to run WoW as Administrator, however, now that you messed with the permissions and read only attributes who knows what you have to do.

Thank you Ztrucker, I never thought of including "WoW" in my searches (the result of troubleshooting on 3 hours of sleep).

Logicearth, I did run it as the administrator (the first thing I do is select "run as administrator" in the comparability menu). According to all the settings I should be able to alter read only.

But unfortunatly I have tried all the solutions given I can find from anywhere. It seems I'll have to go back to XP.

You can try disabling UAC as a test, see if that fixes the problem. If yes then this is a permissions problem.

I disabled them completely (first thing I did when I got the computer). I even have full permission over this folder and it still wont release control.

A buddy of min suggested this thought and I thought I'd ask you guys about it. The file is under C:/Users/Public, he thought windows might have a special protocol set up so all sub folders are read only under that directory.

Nope, I just created a Test folder under C:/Users/Public (all of the existing folders do have the Read Only attribute set) but it was not made Read Only (R).

Tried creating Test under one of the existing Read Only folders (Public Documents) and no R.

Folders stuck on "read-only" mode?
This is the closest I could find as far as a relevant forum section for this problem. The sub-folders within my "My Pictures" folder won't let me save directly to them. For example, I would just save an image from the internet directly to a specific folder for organizational reasons, but it says...
