Recycle Bin slow to empty

I have 7 Home Premium on a notebook and 7 Ultimate on a desktop, both x64. The recycle bin on both was working normally. 2 weeks ago the recycle bin on the notebook needed 5 to 6 hours to empty 11 files of 6.5GB total. If I boot in safe mode I can delete in the blink of an eye. It maybe due to some windows update but which one? 7 Updates are in the 100's of MBs. No mention of this problem on the MS website even though I start to see on the inet that many people are facing the same problem. As to the desktop with ultimate the recycle bin is acting normally.

I'd run sfc /scannow to see if there is anything amiss but I seriously think it may be to processes you have running in the background which ordinarily not be running while in Safe Mode.

Well safe mode usually is a bit helpful and quicker..

Are you running anything other than emptying as deleting files as big as that can put a major strain as well if your running other stuff.

I am intrigued by the fact that your recycle bin holds 6.5gb of files. Do you like to hold files in the bin as a safety net or generally keep changing your mind on whether you want to delete or retain something? If not, you are wasting that space and you can reduce the maximum storage size for the Recycle Bin.

1. On the desktop, right-click Recycle Bin, and then click Properties.
2. Under Recycle Bin Location, click the location of the Recycle Bin you want to change (likely your C drive).
3. Click Custom size, and then, in the Maximum size (MB) box, enter a maximum storage size (in megabytes) for the Recycle Bin.
4. Click OK.

If the above is not the solution, and it may not be since you are expericencing the same with 2 computers and it works in safe mode. I would suggest it was something that you added to the computer at the time of the problem. A program or update?

Thank you Bill2, my bin is 8.5GB I work with a lot of video. HDD these days are monsters. In any case the problem is the same if I send to the recycle bin or not, it will take forever to delete a couple of GBs.

6.5GB should take that long to delete. Compare the time taken to copy or move that much stuff! In Safe Mode you're simply taking files off the index. In full operation the files are being properly erased (well you did say Yes to them being permanently deleted!)

I also am baffled as to what purpose can possibly be served by having a Recycle Bin of such enormous proportions (bigger than the entire hard disk on my first PC ... ah, them was the days!). I don't use it at all not being in the habit of deleting files that I'm not certain I want to delete so I may not be the best judge but I really don't see what advantage there could be in going much beyond a hundred or so MB unless you're actually trying to use up all your hard disk space!

rich46 the problem is not the same. The desktop is working normally and the notebook not. I suspect it must have been an update but which one? Ultimate has much less updates than Home Premium.
