    Start Menu Woes

    Hey Folks,

I wasn't sure where to post this one. This is really more of an annoyance than an issue. I am a bit of a neat freak. I always re-organize my start menu to suite my minimalistic style. After moving some things around I noticed that the icons for certain applications were broken. Any ideas on why this happens and how to fix it? Im using Windows 7 64bit Professional.

Some examples in the first screen shot are Audacity, Bit Che, CuteFTP 8 Professional, File Renamer.

Examples in the second screen shot are Excel and Word.

    Thanks!

Ive noticed certain programs that install a desktop icon, if its delete the same thing happens.

    Sometimes a reboot will fix.

If not, right click the icon, choose properties..
In the shortcut tab choose change icon and browse the the instalation directory and find its icon.
    You may need to reboot.

There may be another way thats easier, but that how I fixed the 2 that done that on mine after deleting the desktop icon.

    Thanks Wishmaster,
That method worked on a few of them. Bit Chi returned an error that said bitchi.exe contains no icon files. When I try to edit either of the Office programs, the "Change Icon" button is greyed out. So, some progress, but others are being more stubborn...

I've had the same issues with a few apps that consistently 'break' the icon and simply refuse to display for X amount of time - and then it's fine, regardless of reboots, icon flushing, re-assigning etc

Are there other exe files in the Bit Che folder? Or perhaps an images or resources folder? The icon is generated by the program somewhere. A reinstall of office will likely do a rep-air install and fix the icons, but if you lose your custom sorting, you may be back where you started if you reorder them. A Guy

It may not be the exe that has the icon. It could possibly be a dll.
