Microsoft used to have a program going on where they would sell you a kit at a discounted price that would convert your copy of Windows to a genuine one if you were given a counterfeit copy. I'm not sure if it's still going on for Windows 7 though.

Yes, the counterfeit program is still going on, but MS has modified to some extent (Geographic area and source of getting the Software).
Any MS employee can tell it better.
Anyway, richc46 can you scan/take photo and post the box pack and DVD media here (not product key) ? Because:

    1) In Future Customers like you will be helped.
    2) you can separately submit it to MS counterfeit gallery.
    3) I am collecting the photos of counterfeit softwares for a documentary.

Im sorry to say that it sounds like you are out of luck... Your only option at this point is to attempt to resolve this issue directly with MS... This unfortunately is a scam that a lot of people have fallen for... you weren't the first and you wont be the last... The moral of the story.. if the offer of a $25.00 key sounds too good to be true, it probably is...

There is no work around for your reduced functionality until you resolve the issue of legitimacy with MS... Good Luck...

You may want to look into the Ebay purchase protection program.
