Best way to partition a hard drive with windows 7

Hi guys i have just setup my computer with the windows 7 on its own hard drive and all my data on a seperate hard drive.
My question is whats the best way to partition this second hard drive, i dont want to loose the data on it if possible.
I know it can be done in the computer managment with shrink volume, but i dont understable the numbers i would like to shrink one partition to approx 250 gb to store my documents and then leave the rest as a 500 Gb drive.

i have tried Acronis disk director but i had to reformat the drive after as it trashed the drive.

i have attached a screen shot of the shrink volume dialog box

    Can someone please help me.

For the size itself, target size in GB X 1024.

So if you want a 250GB partition ..
    250 X 1024= 256000 MB
