    New install 6936 x64

This morning I installed W7 build 6936 64 bit. Haven't tried 64 bit before. I was surprised that the SB X-Fi driver is loaded as I have never been able to get one from the Creative site. Also the Nvidia 7.15.11.7816 was installed. Will update that at some point.

Really haven't noticed much difference yet, except my wei scores for processor and ram went down from the 6956 x32 build. Don't know if that means anything.

It won't install my laser printer. That was automatic in the 6956 32 bit build, but was not in 6801, so maybe will be in the public beta. Have gone to the Okidata web site and they say they are working on a 64 bit Vista driver but that the XP x64 driver would work. Guess again. Tried compatibility, still no.

Also, in Computer management, if I click on disk management, it freezes up. Have to use task manager to close it. Have tried rebooting, but no help.

And the last thing, and this pertains to any new OS. I have a Dell, which means the mouse software came pre-installed. Does anyone know of a way to move the mouse software suite from Vista to W7 or maybe some generic software that will run a 4 button + wheel mouse. The generic MS mouse driver will only do 2 buttons. Hate to buy a new mouse if I don't have to. I have looked through the Drivers and Utilities CD and don't see anything related there. Have gone to the Dell support site and search for the software, but can only find the user help files.

Should probably start a thread at the dell forums, but thought I ask here first.

Still installing software, so haven't tried anything to see if it's any faster than 32, but since most of the software is 32 bit I don't expect too much of an increase.

I must say that other than the printer everything seems to be working pretty well and going pretty easy.

Hi Gary, I installed it again because the first time it was a Upgrade install and found a thew things like Computer Management Freezing when you click on disk management, also when I tried to rename a folder in program files or anywhere other than on the desktop it would change back instantly so I found that moving a file would allow me to rename and then I could put it back.

So I decided that it was the Upgrade that messed everything up and did a fresh install and everything was OK when I finished it Yesterday, Disk Management was fine and I could rename files, Great I thought.... No it's not so great today all the problems are back and in fact I have one extra problem now with Media player closing due to some sort of incompatibility.

I don't know what I have done to make all of this happen but it is strange that after the install it was all fine so it seems like it has to be something I have changed, anyway I will just keep using it for now until the official Beta is released, I'm over all these installs.

    Hi Mark,

I did a clean install and still have that problems and I was in computer management before I did anything. I also can't get windows mail to work, which I had working in 6956. Don't care much for Live mail or anything else I've tried. I'm going to play with it a bit to see if my paint or video programs work any faster than in 32 bit.

I know what you mean about all this installing. Starting to get old.

    Take Care,
    Gary

it would have been perfect if you had a x64 install of vista...
you could have used drivermax and that would have been it....

Been there a few times. No usb mouse driver or software in the 64 bit list. If I add the service tag #, I can only get 32 bit stuff and no mouse anything. Also been to the actual manufacturers site and tried a couple softwares from there, but nothing works. If I remember right, and I might not, Vista is using a microsoft driver. The software seems to be a seperate thing. I'll check that next time I'm in Vista. That will be tomorrow sometime, as I'm too tired tonight.

Well it has to be on the CD somewhere, but I can't find it. They have all the drivers with numbers instead of names, so I looked in properties to see what they where for and nothing for a mouse. Only thing I can figure is that it is on the Vista install disk. Don't know if I can open that to see what's in there without doing an install. I have tried copying the PMmouse.exe an .ini files into 7, but they won't run. Maybe search the registry and see if there are some entries I can transfer.

Edit: Just had a look at the vista install DVD and didn't see anything familiar there. Will try the wireless ones.

    Thanks.

well what dell does is run a script at the end of an install to install all of the extra functionality...
i as i remember (because i have a hp tablet (mine) and had to service a few dell desktops(clients)) there should be unsuall folder...
this should have all the extra installation files (for hp users is swsetup) and i cant remember for dell...

The downloads from Dell won't run. One starts but then has a error and stops. Checked out the DVD and haven't found anything that looks promising. Not a huge deal. I'll keep playing. I appreciate your effort. If nothing else, I've been where I've never gone before. :)
