    my computer properties not working

I have vista 64-bit installed on my dell laptop and hope this is the right forum. I installed it a couple days ago after formatting everything on the hard drive. Now when I right click on my computer in start menu the properties don't pop up. I dislike vista already but is this vista-related? or infected? I don't think so, since I installed it a couple days ago after another virus had infected the system. Any suggestions?

If you can, use the snipping tool to post a screenshot.

Do you mean that the "properties" option isnt' there or when you click on it, it doesnt open?

When I click on Comp. prop. taskman shows "System", its strange it would breifly show control.exe.

Do any of the other right click options of Computer work, like manage?

Try right clicking start menu\properties\startmenu (tab)\Customize (button)\Computer is the first option shown at the top. Try and change it to a menu and back again. Then try removing it (option -Don't show this item) restart, go back and check off "Display as link" and see if that works for ya.

    Good Luck

the "properties" option is on the menu, but won't show the properties after clicking it. oh and just noticed control panel doesn't work either. when I click on it.. a blank windows explorer window appears and then disappears few seconds later. will try the 'restart' thing but doubt it will fix it.

a lot of people seem to have this problem when I did a google search. I will attempt a repair with vista dvd. that will probably fix it. in the meantime I have housecall online scan running and wanted to be sure it is not some rootkit again like last week. then I will do the repair. vista is quite crap. can't wait to get windows 7 soon.

p.s. I did a clean install(wiped everything on the HD and then installed vista again). just a paranoid thought.. do rootkits have the ability to keep themselves on HD even though the HD has been formatted and installed over again..

If you format you are OK. The entire hard drive must be formatted, not just certain drives.

I'm going to second this, and I have repped this suggestion, because frankly, doing your head in with Vista will only stress you out, versus coming to the good side of Windows with 7 which you will love.
